Left 4 Dead and the "Final" areas

Post by MrBlah » Tue Jan 20, 2009 2:48 am

This is about all the "final" areas where you have to wait for so long and kill so many zombies before the door is open. Ya know, the final area of Mercy Hospital, or waiting for the boat to come? or waiting for the armored car to come pick you up? or waiting for the elevator inside the hospital? or for the crazy guy to let you in at the church?

All I have to say is man up and don't be a wuss. I hate it when people go crawl in a corner where there is only one way in so you go untouched during the entire time? Just ask yourself why you play the game on the harder difficulties.... to give a greater challenge right? so why then do you hide in the corner? you might as well be playing it on easy all the time.

So next time you play as some one tries to go hide in the corner, let him and don't go help him if he get incapacitated. Play the game the way it was supposed to be played.

You just contradicted yourself.

There are many strategies to the game, and standing out in the open on the harder difficulties is usually not the best one in my opinion. I'm pretty sure "the way it was supposed to be played" allows for standing in the safest location possible, but I won't tell people that's how they must play because it's a game that is designed with strategic flexibility in mind. There really is no "correct" way to play.

Im just missing the point of hiding in a corner and shooting in one direction. There is no skill or fun in that.

Man, I must not have found these places with only one way in, yet!
Usually when I play people try to set up a room so everyone focuses on just one or two ways in each, and even that ends up in mayhem half the time when a special sneaks by and messes the whole thing up.

No Blah is talking about what happened last night..
We all went to the rock on DT, and Blah was on the mini, and he got pounced on, and we were nowhere near him, and then the world was Blah-less.
The only reason we did that Blah was cuz 1, we sucked last night. 2 It was getting late, and we just wanted to finish it up
Now cheer up my little buttercup..we'll play again tonight, after our group hug

All four players can always stand out in the open, back to back, and shoot in their direction. But corners can do things that back-to-back can't:

1. Corners are safer from Smokers. In the open, they can easily get you and then chaos will happen when the square formation breaks in trying to save your teammate.

2. You generally want to conserve your health seeing as how you have to fight two or so tanks. You don't want to stand out in the open and everyone is at orange health and limping by the time the first tank comes.

3. If you get boomed on, it's easier to protect yourself from both the current horde and the Boomer horder if you only have to worry about one direction they're coming in. If a teammate gets boomed on, the zombies will break their way through the back-to-back positions, knock down your teammate, and once again, breaking this formation will cause a huge mess of teammate incapacitated problems.

While generally, standing in the corner repeatedly isn't exactly fun the 15th time in a row, you do want some form of wall blocking your back or at least eliminating one direction the zombies can ambush you in. Standing out in the open will probably have more consequences and backfires then it does good strategies.

You can always try standing in silly places for finales rather than out in the open or in a corner. The wing of the airplane or each person taking a stair level on those airplane stairs on the Runway Finale or something like that.

Of course, you could just be talking about not standing in a corner rather than standing out in the open, in which case, after you've beaten the finale a couple of times, I would agree with that. Of course, you always want to get a feel of the finales or levels before trying your hand at something that's not a corner.

Wait, wait, wait. You want people to stand out in the open because it's the macho thing to do and "how the game's meant to be played"? What? I'm sorry but if I'm playing Expert, I'm finding myself a nice spot where I KNOW my back is protected and I can take on the situation on my own terms.

I don't know, I can see both ways. I think that the closet near the elevator in No Mercy is a little bit like "cheating," yet I don't find the medical room that only has one entrance, or the corner which is almost as easy to defend "cheating." I think it largely comes down to what seems "intended" and what doesn't. Clearly, Valve knew that the medical room could be defended from one direction since they made the walls breakable in Versus. I think the closet's supposed to be there just for... closet-ing, though, not really meant to be used as a defense spot.

Maybe that doesn't make any sense, but that's how I feel about it.

Hang on a sec, you want people to man up and take it in the cojones in the open just because it was the way the game was meant to played? What the? I rather be intact and be a complete wuss than being knocked around like a ragdoll and having my carcass used for infected food. Next time someone thinks they are superman and go out in the open to be a "man", don't help them if they get incapacitated.

For blood harvest? The tank can smack survivors through the wall by the way. There are no hiding spots in no mercy hospital.

I don't know about you, but I find that if I don't use these strategies as a survivor, I end dying very fast. The only issue was the ramp, but that was fixed.

Maybe it helps if you try to think in this way: How would you defend/protect your team and your self in such kind of situations?

If you have issues with closets that could be meant for spawning. Then try to encourage your team to stick in a corner or a different room that only has one entrance, on Advanced maybe split up and defend two entrances, but thats already a bit risky.

But seriously, I am sorry but I can't share your opinion by standing in wide open areas, or at least open areas, where you get attacked from almost every direction.

Oh and closets or other small rooms also have their down sides: Yesterday I threw a pipe, missed, and it tipped of the door frame back into the room. Well this is already a bit bad, but we saved two gas tanks, they got ignited by the pipe getting us all killed immediately :D We now save our gas tanks somewhere more safe.

I guess it's different if one person holes up and leaves the rest shorthanded to defend themselves than when everyone works together to hold a somewhat defensible position.

Oh, man. I wish I was there for that one. Too bad it started stuttering for me. That would've been hilarious to see. I remember someone saying "The gascan is in the back corner, no one shoot it." Guess that didn't matter
