Mini L4D Tourny
Mini L4D Tourny
I just wanted to see what people's interest is in a mini Left 4 Dead tournament. I was thinking of a format like 4 teams (of 4), where there are 2 matches played then the winners of those two matches square off in a championship game. The event might take anywhere between 2-4 hours (depending on how long the rounds last). Would this be better suited to be played over 1 day/night or 2? I'd say we could start with 4 captains (much like The TF2 cup) who choose teams from a pool of players.
How many people are interested anyways?

I'd be interested, but it depends a lot on when it is.

I think this would be a fantastic idea! I'm better off having it on one day, than dragging it onto two days. Usually the one day, I make sure I have no plans anyways and I'd be available to play all day instead of making room for something over two days.
I do have to disagree with the captains choosing from a pool of players. Someone may get singled out or feel left out if they become the last pick. I'd much rather see everyone feel welcomed and have it be random. It's all for fun anyways.

What could happen is that the Captains would IM each other with a list and silenty pick each person, then just post both team lists. So nobody knows when they got selected or anything.

Exactly. Its not an open choosing session like California Kickball in Elementary School. 4 captains, people who play and know L4D well, take turns choosing players they know well. If I, or someone else randomly assigned teams we'd run into problems of having unbalanced teams (which isnt fun for anyone). Secondly, if people chose their own teams to play with friends, thats when we'd run into people being left out. Heck, I've been left out of many L4D sessions simply because I'm 2 minutes late. 4 people is just not enough.
I was thinking that, if we get enough people to join, that we could set it up atleast a month down the road. To give people time to plan for a day off or something (and so it doesn't coincide with busy holiday season and other Ville events).
I'm still rather uncertain that people will be up for gaming like 4 hours straight though. Getting through one campaign of versus can be quite a test of endurance, much less 2 back to back.

I dig this idea but what if we made it so that each team played each other, but we only play on one map, instead of the entire campaign.
We could choose say, the mercy hospital level for no mercy. Each team would play each other team, and we could record points for each round, we add up all the points and see who has the most. This way, we don't have to play a whole campaign and everyone gets to play with everyone

Re: Mini L4D Tourny
playing a single map would be a bad idea, I mean, the difference between an early tank and a late tank is huge, not to mention witch placement, blah blah blah, the concept of campaign is to balance that all out by being random over many levels

I agree with thorn, it would be nice to be able to have shorter matches against different teams. But realistically, playing just one map isn't going to be particularly fair because it is all random.
I suppose it could work if we played matches over maybe 2 or 3 levels?
Everyone who knows people who play L4D, let them know about this idea, and I'll try to have something setup in January-ish. We still need a few more people (just incase some can't make it)

Would this work better as a survivors vs infected? I do not know if this was the idea initially, or simply have tems run around the same map and simply tally the votes. I have not had the time to really play L4D, but the few times I have played with frineds has been a blast, but always as a survivor, so I am unfamiliar with they dynamics of the VS mode.
I'm game. Hopefully I can get complete my learning curve quickly to be more of an assett than a liability to my team (and no, I'm not offended if I get picked last)

Make what you do today important, because you are exchanging a day of your life for it

Versus pits two teams against each other. One team takes control of the survivors much like in campaign mode (against computers). The other team takes control of the special infected and tries to stop the survivors from getting to the saferoom. Each time a team either makes it to the saferoom or are completely incapacitated, teams switch.
We have several options on how to run the event:
1) Full campaign, each team plays each team. Event held in one evening. Looong event.
2) Full campaign, each team plays one team plus championship game. Event held one evening. Will take several hours.
3) Full campaign, each team plays one or more teams. Event held over several evenings.
4) Split campaign, each team plays every other team over a couple (2 or 3) levels of a campaign. Will not take as long, easier to get each team against each other.
5) Split campaign, teams only play one other team then the championship game, over 2 or 3 levels of a campaign. Will take the shortest time, much easier to fit into an evening.
