I can totally agree with you on the numerous points you have brought up Zork. There are some serious drawbacks to the wrangler, especially in the hands of a noob. Not only for the reasons you listed, but also it leaves you incredibly vulnerable to spies.

My use for the wrangler is very situational. By no means do I just stand behind it and aim at people. I drop the mini and let it go to work and if say a sniper or Soldier are attacking it from range, or I see another SG that is out of range that I can take out with my Mini, I go for it. I use it as a controlled long range weapon that has a fast firing rate with a small spread.

Probably a tactic most people should not use, but I have found it to be effective for the occasional pesky target out of range.
