Is this a symptom of a problem?

Post by Aardvark Ratnick » Sat Sep 14, 2013 11:12 pm

Tonight suddenly at the change of a map we started having one hit one kill and friendly fire kill on both sides. A player, long time veteran of L4dod, commented on his money disappearing. Then mid way through the map you would see a welcome back message. I am sorry I can't remember what it said in particular. After the message things returned to normal. This happened for two maps. It could still be happening but I only witnessed it doing that to two maps. Isn't this a symptom of server problems but not necessarily the actual game server? I just remember hearing something like this a few times. Just curious.

That sounds to me like the server disconnected from the database for a short while on map change, then reestablished connection partway through.

I can't seem to get admin talk to work in IX for some reason. Other servers are fine.

A database! I knew I had heard (ok, seen) something like this before. Just out of curiosity, if it is not giving away any secrets, what was the fix?

On a map change, the game will attempt to make a connection with the database.
If for some reason it fails (theville2.org is unavailable/bad connection/busy server) then this is when the darned errors begin.
So it fixes itself....eventually.

Ask an admin to change the map.

DOG! Your Back!

But wouldn't changing maps just reproduce the error? It is not the maps fault it is the communication between game server and the database server.

I blame Moonshine. He has broad shoulders he can handle the responsibility. :)
