Teamwork Workshops + Highlander Nights - Sat. Dec. 8
Are you wondering how you can improve your TF2 skills as well as being a better contributor to your team? Want to move beyond 'run forward, shoot at enemies, repeat until dead' gameplay? Want to enjoy some friendly Highlander matchups with your fellow Villuns?.
The Saturday Night Teamwork Workshops (led by our own Buzzy Beetle) are designed to help you develop your awareness and strategic planning within the game to make better decisions, stay alive longer and be a more positive contributor to the team.
Each week, we will focus on one lesson designed to help you evolve your TF2 gameplay - targeting, strategic engagement, communication and game awareness. All classes are welcome and will be able to gain something from the lessons. This is not a how-to on playing specific classes, but geared toward helping experienced players become all-around better.
Following a runthrough of the lesson, we will set up players into teams for a Highlander match - 9v9 with only one player per class allowed on each team. Following the match, we'll revisit the lesson and discuss any questions/feedback people have - then play another round with new teams.
Our first event will take place Saturday, Dec. 8 at 9PM VST (Central US time) on the events server (events.thevilluns.org). We will try to hold them on occasional Saturday Nights over the next few weeks or months.
If you're interested in this week's event or in future workshops, please signup in this thread so we know who to expect and can plan accordingly!

Re: Teamwork Workshops + Highlander Nights - Sat. Dec. 8
[Check back for an overview and listing of lesson material as classes occur]
Honestly I'm not a fan of posting a write-up of a lesson and expecting people to read it because something can come up, people forget, and don't wind up on the same page come lesson time. At the same time I don't want to punish players who don't/can't show up due to real life or other previous engagements taking priority.
I really want people to come out of this with the understanding of the theory; not just a quick read of the material because it's, say, homework and you'll get a bad grade if you don't so you do JUST ENOUGH to scrape by. I want to make sure that doesn't happen (and if it does it hasn't been my fault because poor planning.)
I'll probably have to post a poll later or get some feedback going on how people would like to receive lessons if they miss out, if it ends up being a one on one thing or a small make up class or whatever... I REALLY don't want to post things and just assume everyone who didn't make it is going to read it. That's not how things tend to work.
WE ARE GOING TO GO SLOWLY. There is a boatload of material that can be covered but it's only going to be as useful as a) how much players can absorb and b) how much it is practiced. The more you have to focus on the harder it is to practice any one single thing. In limiting the scope of lessons it will make material easier to pick up and retain. Hopefully.
I have the theory in my brain but I don't have lesson structures well defined yet, so please be patient with me if things get repeated. Going to try and keep track of as much of this as possible to streamline later lessons Yunno, provided people have interest in this and that interest persists for an extended period of time...
On Establishing Class Roles:
As was previously mentioned, these workshops are not improving as a specific class. That said, classes are grouped together into a few basic roles that dictate what they aught to be setting as priorities during a game. We'll outline what those basic roles are and what classes belong to them and will continue to reference these groups in further lessons. Essentially this is a foundation for communicating theory.
On Targeting Order:
Ever find yourself in a situation where you don't know who or what you aught to be shooting at, or what is the best target to focus on? We'll go over how to choose targets, why certain ones should be targeted over others and how to make that choice.
