[Suggestion] TheVille Mini-Cup: Highlander
I've been watching quite a few Highlander match commentaries on YouTube, and it got me thinking "this looks like a lot of fun".
For those not in the know, a Highlander works like this:
- There can only be one of each class per team, and there are nine players to a team, filling up each class slot. This means that once you kill someone, you know the enemy doesn't have that class for 15 seconds or so. Unlike regular matches, where you can have like five Spies and killing one doesn't really change the flow of the game.
- Unlike pro 6v6 matches, most weapons are allowed (currently, only the Enforcer, Reserve Shooter and Machina are banned, as well as any set that gives an actual bonus from wearing it [Like the Gas Jockey or Milkman sets]), though with the lax nature of TheVille, I don't think we'll need to ban anything.
- No crits and damage spread (Once again, the noncompetitive nature of TheVille would probably not necessitate the need for either)
I know TheVille once had a "Highlander" match thing, but that was just a bunch of DemoKnights charging at each other with swords. I'm suggesting we try the Highlander mode setup. For fun.
I also know a few people would like to see this happen (namely Fano but there's probably a few others)
WHAT DO YOU GUYS SAY? QUESTIONS? COMMENTS?
(Also, yes I realize Larry posted a topic suggesting just this in the TF2 forum, but hey, why not get everyone's opinions on it where everyone is willing to look?)

We did this a loooong while back, it was fun and I would do it again if it happens at a time I could play. At the time I think we just showed up and picked teams schoolyard style, played a couple of matches and called it a night.

We did this style not too long ago with the Warpath Cup here, it was great! I really like the format and would be up for an event like this!

I could be interested in this. Like a mini weekend thing or something like that.
Also going to throw out there that Highlander games work well with the payload gametype, and I don't nearly get enough payload in my recent map "diet". =D

It would seem in a 9v9 match that crits could have a huge impact. Too easy to knock several of the other team members out in a blow.

I meant that the non-competitive nature would mean we wouldn't need the no-crit/random damage rules in place, though You'll Never Walk Alone brings up a good point.Peahats wrote:I agree, and I don't see how our non-competitive nature can necessitate removal of random crits.

Sorry, I meant that even though we are non-competitive we should still have the no-crit rules in place.

I like Highlander, it would be a fun event night.
Re: [Suggestion] TheVille Mini-Cup: Highlander
on the crit vs nocrit debate:
The Lost Continent servers (which I frequent) have highlander events almost nightly, of which I take part in semi-frequently and have invited several villuns to do so as well (peahats and YNWA have spectated, peahats played one, I think he enjoyed himself even though he only stuck around for one round).
The settings on these games are standard competitive settings, but it is the most casual thing ever regardless of the *super-serious-settings*
My point is this: It's not the game settings that set the mood of the game, it's the community. There's no reason for TheVille to justify the inclusion of random crits because the event is supposed to be "casual" or "non-competitive," the villuns that participate will take care of setting that sort of mood regardless of the actual game settings, it's what we do when we play nightly on TV1, 7, or 8.
Additionally, turning off crits isn't about having a serious or competitive match, it's about having fairness between teams, the same applies to damage spread and shotgun patterns, all which have have been added for the sake of fairness (mostly at the request of the competitive community, but still). The topic of fairness comes up here about once a month, when the inevitable team-stacking thread pops up in the TF2 section, villuns care about playing a fair game, and turning off crits, at the very least for an event like this, would go a long way to achieving that.

I agree with all that. I just didn't want to turn anyone off the idea by specifically claiming that we need no-crit and no-damage-spread and whatnot.
Ultimately, it would be up to the event organizers if and when we do this, though.
