Well, how'd the Meleecenter mod work out? I trust the admins figured out the new button console?
The buttons and such were working fine.

The arena itself was proving troublesome for fighting though, most matches can be described with a seesaw. Both players would just go back and forth around the glass. We were discussing using the middle area of Turbine for next time.

it was ok, but we were talking about other things that could be better... like maybe using the center of turbine.. so that the matches aren't just running around in circles all the time

Maybe use a new map each week? Like Turbine next week, badlands the next, middle of Granary the week after, then do the middle of either ctf or cp Well? A fresh arena each week might prove interesting.

The obstacles, huh! Well, the Meleecenter is the easiest map in my collection to modify, so if the desire is there, I can make a new "mod" version. Speaking of which, I should bring out a final version using the newer style in that mod version.

Really, the issue in most every fight is that people end up spinning around the middle wall until one of them pops out of cover, and the short range fighters (Pyros, Scouts, etc) end up getting shafted by the middle-range fighters (Heavies, Soldiers, Demos, etc). It's also so easy to hide that a Medic could easily replenish all his health if he chose to as long as he kept outrunning the person on the other side of the glass.

What would be ideal is some smaller cover that could be ducked behind or run from one to the other, but if you stay there you'll be overtaken. Such a shield of safety isn't good in these matches.

EDIT: After reviewing the rules, I see how this was worked out now. Although it was clever to have the audience inside the ring, I think that, perhaps, the green glass would have been a better divider. And if it's all weapons, then yes, some significant changes are in order. I'll work on this today.

While I'm at it, I got an interesting idea for another mod.

I've been working on a map at the moment, nowhere near the skill level of Ian's, but an attempt, anyway. Basically, it's a cube shaped fight area, with some cover of various shapes and sizes. The walls of the cube are one-way glass. From the inside, where the fighters are, it looks like cement. From the outside, where the spectators are, it's transparent so they can see in.

Spectators have 4 levels they can be on. Ground level to the fighters, the second level above, the roof, looking straight down on the fight, or underneath the cube, looking up at it. A Judge's Box is in the dead center of the roof, sealed in glass to prevent interference from spec's. The floor of the Judge's Box is latticed, so they can see names and health of competitors below.

This way, the spectators can run around, jump, fight, or do whatever, without distracting the competitors in the middle. Access to the arena is via a drop from the second level, down in to the fight pit. You can get back out, but the stairs are only a couple units wide and pinned to the wall, so as to avoid interfering with play (and to keep people from accidently/intentionally getting out mid-fight.

I'd be happy to send a copy of the files to anybody who wants to look at it, make suggestions, or incorporate it in to something cooler :-)

Glad to hear new "arena type" maps are being conceived! I hate to sound like Microsoft or something, but I could incorporate it into what I was working on yesterday/today if the Higher Ups don't mind me changing it. To be honest, I didn't give spectators much choice but to look down or join spectator in what I created.

Shoot me a PM with your email addy, Ian, and I'll send it your way. I have no problem with you doing whatever you like with it :-) I'm much better at concepts than I am at making them look good when I build them :-P
