Curse VALVe.
I spent four hours trying to find ways to get TV3 working properly without client crashes but no joy.
Hopefully they will figure out a fix (even though Alfred Reynolds denies there is one)

There was an update to HL1 engine lastnite. The server is still not working correctly along with hundreds of other Dod servers across the net.

Half-Life 1 Engine Update Released
October 22, 2008, 4:40 pm - Jason Ruymen - Product Update
A new set of Steamworks features have been released for all Half-Life 1 engine multiplayer games: Counter-Strike 1.6, Condition Zero, Team Fortress Classic, Deathmatch Classic, Ricochet, Day of Defeat and Half-life 1 Deathmatch. The update includes Steamworks features such as player avatars in the scoreboard when playing Counter-Strike and Condition Zero. The update also contains several bug fixes, listed below. Note that this update will require all game servers to restart.

Bug Fixes

Removed the need to manually re-login and re-authenticate to Steam while in game

Fixed a crash on startup when running windowed with a non-standard desktop resolution

Removed the display of saytext (in-game chat text) from players whom you've blocked in Steam friends

Locked down several engine cvars to prevent malicious .script exploits

Enforced file consistency on several sprites in Counter-Strike

Removed "ex_extrapmax" cvar (no longer needed)

Server

Added "-noaff" command-line option to disable setting of thread affinity

Added "bannedcfg" cvar so admins can choose which file is written to by the "writeid" command

It's not just DoD that is affected.
It applies to all HL1 games, including CS1.6, TFC, CS:DM and many others.
A lot of stuff has been broken...: rcon, you can't access the server via HLSW.
Some stuff still works including MetaMod, AMXX, Shrikebot.
But the fact is, you can't join a server without a client crash five minutes later. On my system, not only does it crash and I have to exit and use Task Manager to kill HL1, it also completely borks the Windows graphics when you Alt-Tab out.

The anger is all through the Steam forums.
The lead developer is a guy called Alfred Reynolds, who has been around VALVe from day 1. He has said that there is nothing wrong.

But the fact is, that if you run a server with no mods, no addons, nothing, players join, their game crashes.

So right now, we are waiting for VALVe to fix their mess. It's gonna be a death knell for HL1, if they aren't careful.

5 seconds for me, and i also have to alt-tab to kill hl.exe with task manager. just have to wait for a steam update i guess :/

1,314 1,617 Age of Chivalry
1,096 1,163 TrackMania Nations Forever

Aloha,

Added the line...

cl_solid_players "0"

to my config and I've been solid so far. if you dont know where your config is
its usually steam/steamapps/youraccntname/day of defeat/dod/config.cfg

make sure to change it to read only after...unless you have a copy of the cfg laying around, just incase you happen across an angry admin on a diff server and he slowhacks you.

This fix has worked for some...but not everyone. Also it's always good to make changes with steam completely shut down.

Thanks for the welcome news Dog.

Your hard work is appreciated (ie: smashing your head against the HL1 engine :wall:). I didn't recently buy DoD only to see it unplayable on the only server I prefer to play on.
