Mic Speaker Mute Mod

Post by Spaceman Spiff » Sun Sep 29, 2013 5:52 pm

I’ve mentioned to a few regulars I would put this post up to help people who use mics but not headsets, just regular speakers along with their mics.

The problem is when you speak into your mics it picks up all the background noise from the speakers as well, resulting in echos, feedbacks, looped game noise, extra… The voice tends to be heavily muffled and garbled. This does not effect people using headset/headphones/mic combos.

This can be easily solved by having the speakers volume go to mute whenever you press the talk button, and then back to normal the moment you release the button.

First step is to find the location where TF2 is installed. Locate the primary Steam folder and navigate to the following:

...Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\cfg

In folder cfg, make a text file called autoexec.txt

Cut and paste the following 3 lines into it:

alias "+mic" "volume 0; +voicerecord"
alias "-mic" "-voicerecord; volume 1"
bind "abcxyz" "+mic"

Replace abcxyz with the key you use to press when you speak. For example my key is the shift button so my last line looks like this: bind "SHIFT" "+mic"

Important: After saving the text file and exiting, rename it to: autoexec.cfg (ignore any warnings about it being unusable).

If you're unsure how your button is designated, you can always look at the config.cfg file via wordpad and look for bind "abcxyz" "+mic" and see what text is written there. Be careful not to modify the config.cfg file though. (Its safer to make an autoexec file for any mods).

Thats it. Restart TF2 and you should be good to go.

See you on the servers. :)
