Let's talk about HUDs

Post by The Domer » Sat Dec 15, 2012 4:49 pm

Quite a few of us like to use custom HUDs when we play TF2. Personally, I've been using Community Hud for a while now, but I've been thinking about switching it up. So, those of us who use custom HUDs, what do you use and why do you like it? Post a link if you can!

In the past, I used Garm3n, but I grew tired of reinstalling every time a TF2 patch broke it. Now, I use the default and I'm perfectly happy with it.

I've used a ton, PVhud is good, as long as it's not broken.

I've been using FrankenHud and I'm extremely happy with it. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/frankenhud

Used Community for about 6 months then went back to default.

Garmen for a long time, using the 4MP version. I really like that it puts my uber percentage next to my cross hairs and turns it green when I have 100%. Also, the health of my targets is a big number with no cross or anything like that, so I can objectively gauge their actual health and not just their percentage of full. Lastly, it color codes the health, and makes it blue when I am over healing them, which I love.

It is annoying that it breaks when TF2 updates, and that it takes a day or two sometimes to get updated afterwards, but I think the upsides are too strong to ignore.

I use Community HUD a lot, mainly because updates are usually extremely quick and it takes the best of most other HUD's.

That being said, during competition play i like information a much more centered around the crosshair for specific classes so i'm a fan of Shlaner's modified HUD as well.

After a bit of research, I think I've finally settled on my new HUD. Omp Hud. It's super sexy. That is all.

There's always something about every custom hud I don't like -- like the way it displays the scoreboard, or the positioning of this or that element, it's always something, so nowadays I'm 99% default.

The only non-default element of my TF2 is my crosshair, I use a homemade Hud Crosshair (it's a green plus symbol with a thin black outline). It's crazy how much more visible this is than any of the default crosshairs, I can't believe high contrast/two-color crosshairs aren't available any other way.

But Cat Square, wait. How do you take all those screens where it's like you have cl_drawhud set to 0? I've always thought it was a custom hud you used to get clean screenshots.

Or am I an idiot in some fashion?

Could set cl_drawhud 0 before taking the screenshot, to make the HUD vanish for the image.

It depends on what you need. Because I run my eyefinity set up, I need all my information centralized on my screen so I do not keep turning my head to look at my health or ammo bar.

So, I have chosen PVHUD as my HUD of choice. The developer has kept updating when needed. Sometimes an update breaks it but he gets to it in a day or two after the update.

My screens are mostly kill-cam (death-cam? freeze-cam? whatever you call the freezeframe that happens after you die), so only the crosshair gets captured.
