How To Recognize The Carrolton Cheater
I've had a lot of experience with the Carrolton Cheater over the past 9 months or so. So I thought I would make a thread about his various tells and tactics. If you're unfamiliar with whom I refer to and are a supporter, check the various threads in The Llama's Pen.
I'll start with the obvious first step.
1> See a suspicious player? Check to see if he's connecting from Carrolton TX:
Go here while he's on the server. Click on his name, see where he's connecting from. It's under "location". Never once have I encountered the cheater connecting from a diffferent town.
His tactics are..
2> His preferred classes are, in order: Heavy, Demo, Engie, Sniper. Why Sniper last? His cheats make it too obvious that he's botting when he's on Sniper. But he will occaisonally go Sniper.
3> The cheats he uses are: all of them. Aimbot, no spread (for Heavy minigun), wallhacks and I've seen a crit cheat from him last time.
4> Tactics he uses when he feels no heat: By and large, his favorite method is Heavy with bot and no spread. You'll notice his minigun quivers when he's "aiming". That's the no spread/bot cheat for Heavy. As I mentioned before, he does in fact aimbot with Sniper (when he feels like no one's watching). But very rarely, as it's too obvious.
5> Tactics he uses when he feels the heat: When he thinks his cover is being blown, his method of laying low is to use his wallhacks. Typically, he'll play Engie and use his cheats to see cloaked Spies. Or, he'll play Demo and start setting up sticky traps in unusual locations. Places where you would need to see through walls in order to detonate them at the right time.
His tells are..
6> He connects from Carrolton TX: See step one.
7> If someone goes to spec he imediatley turns off his cheats, or off classes. So if you go to spec him, and he quickly switches to Medic or stops being so "good" that's a tell.
8> I hate to paint the avatar-less as cheaters but: He always has a "?" avatar. Every single time.
9> This sounds strange but: He likes to portray himself as willing to teamswitch and help a bad team. Yeah, I know it's weird but he'll make it a point to switch to a bad team and tell people in chat that he's bored with winning so easily. Perhaps it's an effort to keep the heat off himself?
I've personally called the voteban on him 3 or 4 times. And he's been banned here around 10 times on various accounts. So be on the lookout, vigilant Villuns. Stay...Villugilant.

Also he is able to track you as a dead ringer spy after you've just feigned death while you still have the "no-flicker" buff.

About playing Spy against this guy, he will never, ever allow himself to be backstabbed when he's playing his favorite class, Heavy (the most stab-able class). He loves his Spydar too much, sometimes it's obvious. It's another one of his tells.I am a mummy wrote:Also he is able to track you as a dead ringer spy after you've just feigned death while you still have the "no-flicker" buff.
I left that out of the OP because it's too damn long.

He does occasionally repeat names, but rarely for long, and not usually enough to directly catch him by. Names I know we've got for him so far include, in approximate chronological order:6Larry9 wrote:Is there a theme to his username's or are they just random?

Re: How To Recognize The Carrolton Cheater
We've talked about that couple times before, but we also have some legit players from Carrolton, and it wouldn't be cool to ban a whole domestic location because of the actions of one juvenile delinquent.

It's a very small world.Alizée Fan wrote:

Not hard to get around those. I think a hardware ban would be a better choice if we have the ability to do so, but I hear those aren't much better.Flaming Cheese Wheel wrote:Is there an IP block?
This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.

I've also seen variations on Crouching Heavy, Hidden Minigun. At least that's the name style he first used when we started banning him. I'm pretty sure this guy accounts for at least 10% of my bans as an admin.

Re: How To Recognize The Carrolton Cheater
It aggravates me to hear that there is someone in my Metroplex doing this. (Carrolton is less than a 15 min drive from me) So I'll be the first to say that if you ever find this guy I'll gladly volunteer to go play Mook!

Thanks for the info Crusty!
That's a good call to not ban everyone in Carrollton as although it is not a huge city, it is not small either (population ~120k)
And DarkDrifter, howdy neighbor (I'm in Richardson)
