Murderball
So back in the good ol' days of TFC, there was a custom map called "Murderball". It used four teams of up to 8 players in a big arena-type map. Each team had their own base, identical to the other bases with a sniping post, area for sentries, etc. In the center of the map is a ball, if you touch it, you now have the ball and must stay alive as long as possible. This generally involves hiding inside your base and having the rest of your team fend off the three other teams which swarm the base trying to kill you. If you die, the ball is dropped in place and free for anyone else to pick up. The team that held on to the ball the longest after the end of the round wins.
Here's a decent page showing the layout:

and here's a mediocre video showing the gameplay (ignore the megaman-esque music)

I can remember some amazing games requiring huge amounts of teamwork. Generally it involved two engies with sentries in strategic locations, demos, soldiers and heavies ready to defend the ball (or attack to help get it back) and one or two really good scouts/spies to retrieve the ball. If the ball carrier was clever they could hide for a while, then exit the base and enter an enemy base and hide (all players are notified when the ball is inside a base or it is dropped/picked up) - this can confuse the attacking teams as they might think a different team has the ball and start attacking them, giving your own team time to rebuild. It was also unique in that there were four teams and you generally wouldn't shoot at teams that didn't have the ball (you could, but it would almost ensure your team loses), with the exception of snipers. The "spawn" areas were open, so you could run into an opposing base and get health/armor (remember armor?!) from their base - even stage a moderate attack from this area.
Anyone now if something similar exists for TF2? Anyone else remember this map?
Good times.

Re: Murderball
I like the idea, but it just seems unheard of going beyond the BLU and RED format. Four teams would be.. weird. I'd be down for it though, sounds fun. I just don't think it exists.
Re: Murderball
The closest you're going to get is probably a CTF map that utilizes a neutral flag in the middle of the map that both teams fight for and then cap. There are a couple but the names escape me, regardless, you're going to have a hard time finding people that want to play these maps anyway, seems everyone only wants to do payload these days.

There are a couple neutral payload maps out there, though like Fano, I can't come up with the names. One is still on customs, I believe, while the others I know of I haven't seen for a year or two.

Re: Murderball
I think the closest thing TF2 has to Murderball is King of the Hill. Similar to how Hunted became Payload.
Similar concept: Hold onto the objective longer than your opponents do.

Re: Murderball
There are some KTF (keep the flag) that are very similar in concept.

Re: Murderball
There is a TF2 remake of the map at http://www.gamebanana.com/tf2/maps/155581. I had a look at it looks interesting, but it's probably too easy to defend with only two teams.
Still, I think it would be worth giving it a try on TV2.

I've often pondered about creating two more teams and how to do it, code-wise

I thought they locked the TF2 assets to the point that you couldn't create more teams?

Re: Murderball
I dunno if it's possible to do in a plugin, but it's probably not or someone would have already done it, but if we had a plugin that did the following, it would effectively fake four teams.
1. Set friendly fire settings so the half of BLU can kill the other half of BLU, and half of RED can kill the other half of RED.
2. Change the colour of half of the BLU players so they look green.
3. Change the colour of half of the RED players so they look yellow.
4. Move the spawn location for for half of the players.
