The equalizer will add something new, I say go for it.

Friends made are never forgotten. Even if we grow apart or move on from this life, the fun times we spent together was all worth it.

Seems like it would be the exact opposite. There is going to be a lot of standing around, standing, one hit, then hit for crit game over.

I am a strong believer in the shovel. With the equalizer, you just let the other guy hit you a few times and then you go to town.

Re: MeleeMania Vote - Equalizer or Shovel
That was my thinking. If you go with Equalizer, we'll have 3 different types of Melee Manias:
1. No Crits (Spy/Pyro Axetinguisher)
IMO, the best Melee Manias have been those without crits. The matches are intense as the players trade blows and everyone wonders who will shuck and jive their way to victory. Lots of these matches go the distance.
2. Crits
Crits totally negate any progress that anyone has made in their battle as even one of them will destroy their opponent in one hit (depending on class). I've never been a fan of crits in MM but you learn to deal with it.
3. Underdog Dominance
Since The Equalizer favors the soldier that is more hurt, players might as well not even attempt to hit their opponent as doing so will only strengthen them. Someone could essentially bob and weave and land 4 good hits on their opponent only to lose instantly when their opponent lands one crit shot. It's worse than standalone crits and IMO would not be fun in any way. It would be counterproductive.

There's only one way to find out if such strategies would work - to play it.
If it isn't well received, well then lesson learned. I think it'd be hard for something as small as a weapon choice to completely ruin the invent. The Melee Mania is as much about the shenanigans surrounding the matches as it is about the matches themselves.

Re: MeleeMania Vote - Equalizer or Shovel
Even Mr. All For Fun Masakari votes for the shovel.
I'm telling ya, it's gonna be worse than having crits. At least crits are random. The Equalizer's speed and damage increase will be evident as the people get hurt. It's counterproductive for the people landing the hits.
I agree that it's about more than the matches. The shenanigans outside the ring are fun and encouraged. It's just that some of us actually like the 1 on 1 combat and try hard. The Equalizer will actually punish the people trying to, you know, advance.

The fun surrounding the whole event is a big part of what makes it enjoyable, but the central focus and the main reason we all get together is to have a good-natured competition. No matter how much fun is had in the stands, if the fights leave a bad taste in the mouths of a handful of contenders, the event is a failure.

Why not try it out and see if the equalizer is full of fail or not?

I agree, there's no reason we cant have reasonable matches and still have an excellent time. Last month's was the most fun for me yet.
