Anyone played on servers with melee only overtime?

Post by EzCrash » Sat Jan 12, 2008 7:35 pm

When TF2 was first released and I was not a devout Ville player, I played on a server where every overtime switched all players to Pyros with axes only.

It was a lot of fun and kept players from turtling. Although something like this would give Carpe a tremendous advantage, as he has his crazy mad magic axe skillz. :P

We have thought about it.
But the problem is that it makes the server very unstable during sudden death and most servers that run it tend to crash at some point.

Our goal at the Ville is to maintain healthy crash-free servers. For years DoDS crashed on us a lot and many many hours were spent trawling through logs and putting mdmps into VStudio trying to find out why.

Besides, we get all the melee we want during our Fun Nights!

... and that is what makes TheVille servers such a great place to game.

You guys are obviously on the look out for any game mods and changes that would make the servers a more interesting place to play. At the same time, not willing to do something that would make the servers unstable or compromise playability.

Thanks for the reply, Dog.

Are there any known issues with single-class sudden death? I'm running my server w/ BeetlesMod and single-class (random) sudden death. It's proved very entertaining -- if sometimes frustrating (sniper sudden death, anyone?) -- but so far I haven't had any issues. I'd imagine you folks have more experience with that though.
Thanks for reading my inane rantings :D

That would be awesome... if it crashes though, I guess we shouldn't do it

If you allow players to keep classes and just enable melee-only, are there crashes? That sounds like a great alternative to turtle-fests.

One thing I noticed while tinkering with beetlesmod is that you can restrict building SGs (or all buildables) during sudden death, without forcing melee or classes. Perhaps this is something TheVille could look into, to help against turtling during SD?
