Stickies are my default. Pipes are for bad pyros that run in straight lines, and angles/distances that stickies can't handle without charging first.

it really depends on the type of map for me, most of the time I use pipes because I have stickies camped out somewhere also depends on what I'm trying to kill

Situational for me. Backpedaling? Pipes Attacking stationary or mostly stationary targets? Stickies Lots of stuff can be either or and I do it based on ammo.

For me, stickies. They are more controllable. You can place one or two at your feet in enough time that the person coming at you won't get past them. I notice a lot of people zig zag if they are coming at a demo.

Plus, charge a sticky up and it can go flying far. It's more about control. I find them easier, they don't bounce.

Pipes I use in tight knit spaces, so I know someone will definitely be hit.

I'm a pipe guy

stickies I find for attacking is to slow, so I just set them up as a trap/on the point etc. and just have at er with the pipes.

plus, I've gotten pretty good at hitting dead on with the pipes XP

I am also in the camp of those who hate to leave stickies back on the point. I feel like half a demo if I'm at the lines shooting pipes but can't use my stickies. If nothing else, if my stickies are somewhere else, I have only 4 ammo to use instead of 12 before reloading.

That said, I use pipes as my primary weapon. Stickies are used for traps, for firing into unsuspecting crowds, launching myself somewhere and killing pyros/heavies. I prefer the speed and ricochet factors of pipes for general offense. I wish they would switch the carrying capacity of pipes and stickies to make the sticky bombs even more important to place and use carefully.

See I dont see how their easy to kill with than pipe bomb? You have to place atleast 3 of them and have the enemy walk right over them to kill pretty much anything. They dont shoot very far and are often seen and avoided. The pipe bomb, if you can aim, will actually kill pretty much everyone (who's not buffed) with 2-3 pipes. You can spam them and get luck kills. I'm amazed at people who have 2500 kills with stickies right now.

I don't play demo much, but stickies seemed easier for me. The pipes were too random for my taste. But I suck at the class so I wouldn't take my word for it.
