The Long Dark

40% off until Friday:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/305620/

Its early access, but the devs have a good track record of updating the game since it was released to early access in September. EA gets you sandbox survival, with story mode coming out when the game is released.

Great game worth the price.

For anyone interested, I have been playing this a bunch the last few days.
For a game in Alpha, I am pretty impressed with how things are going.

I have played the game on all 3 difficulty levels and been able to survive for over 50 days on all.
The game has lots of possibility for expansion and additions of more items.

The general gist is that you are dropped in the middle of the "Canadian Wilderness" and have to survive. You basically can run around find buildings, corpses to loot items. If you are lucky enough to find a gun and some bullets you can shoot deer/wolves and harvest meat, furs and gut to use for food, make supplies and other tools. You can also fish in fishing huts on the lakes.
You can also make snares to trap rabbits.
Lots of supplies are limited, and there are only so many places to loot so long survival will require obtaining lootable food as well as some hunting or trapping or fishing.

Tools deteriorate and need repair, as do your clothes.

The main threats to your life are wolves, but you can fight them off at a cost to your "condition", cold, hunger, thirst.
Once you get the hang of the game and figure out the aggro radius of the wolves, the game gets a little easier. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to ask. I feel like I have already gotten my money's worth.

I am enjoying this game a lot!

Very isolating... just what a busy mom/nurse/wife needs!

My longest survival so far has been 18 days.. died of infection.. couldn't find any of the moss needed to cure it...
I have had numerous restarts but realize that the rifle is so important to survival!!! I have only found it one time :?

I have yet to locate "the bunker".... but am keeping my eyes peeled!

Did you appreciate the irony of dying of an infection working as a nurse? :P

Antibiotics will work too beyond the moss if you can find some. Also make sure to disinfect all wounds with antiseptic and to eat your cooked meat before it degrades too much to stop them from happening. Where did you make your base for your long run?

Also PV- I think you can play sandbox mode without spoiling story mode. Playing some games in early access can make you not care about the full release but my impression is that this isn't the case here.

I have made it to 50 days on hardest mode on 2 different play throughs so far.

Once you discover the 3rd area, you get the option to start there if you start a future game.

Spoiler alert, there are bears in the 3rd area and 2 shots with the Rifle seemed to only make it mad before it tore me to pieces.
You also can't fight back in a bear attack like you can with the wolves. If you feel like taking on a bear, start shooting from far away.

Also, there are around 6-8 bunker locations that spawn randomly when you start the game. From what I can tell, they are only on the mystery lake map.
Consult the Youtube for locations if you are not huge into scavenging the map for the possibility of a bunker.

yeah.. Mateo, I did enjoy the irony of that one :p

I was out of antibiotics and spent my last hours trying to locate moss.. no luck.

Since then, I have made it to 20 days... usually i stay between trappers cabin and mystery lake cabin. At 20 days I died to a weird reload glitch... I had been wolf attacked.. fending him off and had 35 percent remaining.... then I reloaded from that save and respawned with like 2%... died of blood loss- was kinda bizarre since i had bandaged directly after and figured I could just reload and rebandage.

I finally found the coastal highway.. so am currently playing that one mostly... the weather is pretty annoying and the multitude of wolves.. but I love the setting...
On that map, I am currently staying at a coastal home with a fireplace near the gas station (because work table).... I prefer the homes out on the ocean islands but
can't really craft out there.
