Mario kart 8

Post by Gizanked » Mon May 05, 2014 7:32 pm

So this comes out the end of the month. Anyone else going to get it?

There is a promo for a free game download through club Nintendo game if you register it by the end of June I think. Not a ton of games to choose from but a couple that will make buying this at release worth it I think.

I'll definitely be picking it up. It looks like a huge improvement over previous ones in many ways - respawn times seem much shorter after falling off the track, and while a recent trailer disappointingly reveals that the Blue Shell has not been ditched as early trailers and E3 footage suggested, it looks like it may have at least been given the nerf it so badly deserves. At 0:41 in that trailer, one can see it being deflected with what appears to be a new item. The visuals are all-around beautiful (just got a new HDTV not long ago and can't wait to see this game on it :D), and the fact that much of the footage and screenshots out right now showcase what appears to be the return of Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road (see this trailer from 1:06 onward, which also includes a nice update of MK64's Rainbow Road music) has me extremely excited.

More info on the free game promo can be found here. I'll most likely be going for Pikmin 3 as I've never owned a Pikmin title but have always wanted to.

If I had a WiiU I would be all over this.

Definitely getting this when it releases. Hyped for the Koopalings, not-so-hyped for Pink Gold Peach.

I already own both New Super Mario Bros. U and Pikmin 3, so I'll probably go for Wind Waker HD.

This and Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U makes me tempted to sell my Wii and get a Wii U

The only major downside to upgrading is that the Wii U doesn't support GameCube games or allow the use of GameCube controllers. A used GCN isn't too expensive though if you don't already have one lying around.

Don't do it in that specific order, though. You can transfer all of your Wii data to a Wii U.

Reviews for MK8 are looking positive based on a quick Google search. It sounds like things are much more skill-based now, with a heavy focus on keeping random chance from screwing you over: respawn times are far shorter after falling off the track, item distribution is a lot more fair, the AI's rubber-banding tendencies are drastically reduced, and the new "Super Horn" item can stop the accursed blue shell dead in its tracks when used properly. I haven't looked forward to a Mario Kart game this much since MKDS.

Spoilers about new and returning courses follow!
VIEW CONTENT:
IGN has a list of all tracks in the game, new and returning. The new Rainbow Road reminds me vaguely of Diddy Kong Racing's Spaceport Alpha from what little I've seen of it.

The classic track selection appears to be quite well made this time around - I'm seeing a lot of my personal favorites, including MK64's Toad's Turnpike (which now features boosts, ramps, anti-grav sections, and two-way traffic), Royal Raceway (now with 100% more flying!), Yoshi Valley (I don't care what anyone else may think of this course, I love it), and Rainbow Road (which looks absolutely amazing with that new Paris-inspired city backdrop).
