Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Shutdown May 20

Post by Will T. » Mon May 05, 2014 7:20 pm

For those who aren't already aware, Nintendo is terminating the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service (the one that powers the Wii and DS/DSi) on May 20. This only affects older games and has no bearing on the Wii U or 3DS, which are not technically part of the "Nintendo WFC" umbrella; or the Wii Shop Channel, which is also still available on the Wii U and is needed on the Wii to transfer data to a Wii U system. Most of the DS games it affects don't work with modern routers anyway due to the general switch from WEP wireless security to WPA a few years back. It does notably affect a handful of later-era WPA-compatible DS and DSi titles though. This most likely doesn't affect anyone here in any major way since a lot of these games don't have any significant surviving online-only content, except maybe the gen-5 Pokemon titles, which I understand still have a semi-thriving online community.

A full list of games whose online features will no longer be available can be found here.
