Also managed to have some success at long last getting to the Mun and back.

My ship (huge, difficult to steer behemoth!). Took a while to get any kind of configuration right where it would actually get me close to the Mun with enough fuel to get back:

Jebediah jumped around the surface for a bit, got a sample or two, then returned back to Kerbin for 243 science. I think Minmus should be next!

There is a lot of wasted power. .. power requirement increases as a cube to the speed of an object moving through a fluid

Remember that they may not all be firing at once - you can make a fairly efficient rocket using SRBs, if you stage them appropriately so they only fire as needed for a proper acceleration curve. It's not ideal, but it isn't always bad.

I think it's typically a bad idea to use SRBs outside atmo.

haha but SRB in open space = escape velocity easy

nah, I just use it as a cheap way to kick me out of kerban's gravity well and fall around the sun to get to the outer planets. no math calculations required :P
