Black Mesa Source Release

Post by MateoTheBold! » Sun Sep 02, 2012 1:05 am

Looks like a date is finally up!

http://www.blackmesasource.com/

For anyone not aware, its a third party conversion of Half Life 1 into the source engine with some gameplay changes/updates. In other words, its a mod for HL2 that seeks to recreate HL1 as faithfully as possible.

Gameplay footage below. *Warning* Some minor language issues (in game) occur in the footage.

We'll see if they actually do it this time. :P

Looking forward to it if it ever really does come out. The road to release has been a hard one for the people working on it, but if they ever get it done, it looks like it should be awesome.

Sweet, I figured they'd never actually get this finished!

Here's hoping it didn't go the way of Duke Nukem Forever, what with its development time.
"So what have you been up to, man? Haven't seen you in so long!"
"Ah, you know how it is. Doin' a lot of side projects, some consulting, maybe a little freelance... Those are words that people say when they haven't actually been doing anything, right?"

Mind you from what I am lead to believe it is still incomplete but they are releasing what they have finished so far.

EDIT: looked it up its 14 out 18 chapters so the bulk of the game.

What happened was they were originally going for a 2009 release. During that year they cut a lot of corners to try and make that date. Looking at their product, the project lead said no way they can release this. They scrapped most of the project and started over.

I remember following this when it was first announced. It's awesome to finally see it released (again).

That's what I heard as well.

Which seems really odd to me considering the mindset they seemed to have on the project.

No, f'ing way! I'm surprised they have anything to release, I figured they'd just been pulling everyone's leg for the last, what 4-5 years?

It's not like these guys were being paid quite the same as the DNF dev team. They also didn't have the same size of team. So what it took a while.

Apparently they're taking the extra time to re-do Xen and make it more fun overall. Even Valve admitted they phoned it in on the Xen chapters compared to the rest of the game and so the team has taken it upon themselves to provide a better experience.

Other than that, I'm happy for their commitment to the quality the game seems to have. Here's hoping that it comes out fine and is exactly the re-make we've been waiting for.

The only part of Xen I remember disliking is the jumping one. You fall into the hole and get launched up... I always used noclip on that level.

I just can't wait to hear how they've blended in the new soundtrack they've put together. All of that music is totally amazing and I cant wait to see how its implemented. Still wish that the Black Mesa Source Theme could have been added to the game. Best song of them all in my opinion!
