MechWarrior Online

I'm feeling conflicted.

One one hand, it is a new MechWarrior game that looks to actually have some benefits to make it more sim-y than just a first person shooter.

On the other hand, it's an all multiplayer F2P game. Bleh.

I'm going to try to stay open minded about it. Assuming storyline is done right, then it will probably make me want to play it.

Two side notes:

1) You can reserve pilot names for the game already at http://mwomercs.com. Guess who took Masakari already? ;)

2) The same site has a dev blog on the history of the game up to this point.

I signed up simply so that others could not steal my name.

Not much danger of my name being taken, but who doesn't love giant mechs killing the crap outta eachother?

If you have the old FASA sourcebooks that have complete personnel rosters, you can find a whole bunch of shout-outs to other series mixed in, that they hoped no one would care about.

I think you mean 3015, but yeah. This is what came from that trailer that got released in 2009.

I don't think so - if there's going to be no AI aspect, I imagine you would pick a clan. But, that said, if it's staying true to the storyline then clans would eventually be taken control of and disbanded, which is hard to control in an MMO environment.

True.. but is it going to be MMO style, or more like a TF2 kind of deally, where you just shoot each other over and over on the same few maps?

MechWarrior holds a special place in my heart. It's over all, my favorite game series ever, and the first game I ever played online.

I'm getting the MMO impression. Since its going to have time be 1:1 with the future (Playing Sept. 1, 2012 will be the equivalent of Sept. 1, 3047 or so, and time coincides with the future). It sounds very MMO-y to me.

Beta is coming up soon, and those registered can check a box in their profile and enter in system specs to try and get at the beta.

Sounds like there will eventually be a pay option to get into the beta guaranteed along with getting other "Founder's" perks too.

I'm being incredibly cautious with this game. I'm questioning phrases already like "Premium Account" and having to pay $60 for initial stuff that on paper doesn't sound like much. Still, this is the best candidate for new go-to game.
