I need help enjoying Oblivion

The game seems very weird to me. I absolutely love Fallout 3/NV but I'm having a lot of trouble enjoying myself in Oblivion. For some reason it doesn't seem like my character changes much throughout the game. Sure I level up and then when I sleep my stats go up but my characters don't seem to become better fighters, with the exception of slightly more damage. Now is there something I am missing in the game, is there something that comes later on?

I've been scared of Skyrim because while it looks very good I'm afraid I will be just as bored as Oblivion. However, in the developer videos the game does have focused talent trees that will evolve your character. Anyways, is there anything I'm missing in Oblivion, anything I should try?

Well back when I played I used to use a huge mod that was called Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. That really improved the game for me. But for me I had a hard time making my characters feel different since you could essentially do the same exact things with any type of character.

Yeah, that's the feeling I'm getting too. The only differences seems to be is the amount of damage you are doing because a few stats tucked away are slightly different.

Its like "You've learned Expert sword fighting". Oh really, what can I do now... oh, +2 damage.

To my knowledge these are the only things that will ever change from leveling up or using different characters: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Skill_Perks

* I went to download that mod, seemed pretty cool as well as some youtube vids on it. However... the website doesn't seem like it has been touched in a few years and all the download links are dead.

I believe the complaint you are making is among the various ones that were leveled against Oblivion, in general. Morrowind was phenomenal, and Bethesda moved away from that for Oblivion, much to the disgust of some folks. For Skyrim they've said they're trying to move back a bit, to more character development and RP. Here's hoping.

Yeah, from the videos I've watched it seems they solved my problem. Each skill (sharp weapons, blunt weapons, light armor, etc) will have a constellation which acts as a skill/talent tree. I think I may have played morrowind for a bit once. I know there was a game where I got sucked into a painting and I have no idea what game it was from.

Sounds an awful lot like a particular Oblivion quest if you ask me.

Coming from Fallout 3 to Oblivion could be a bit jarring. Fallout is very clear about how your character evolves as the game progresses, both in words and actions. Oblivion is more subtle, though there are big changes for those who play a certain way. Sneaky types will find their sneak criticals dealing more damage, and skilled alchemists can make far better potions with a wider range of ingredients.

As for character development, that is kind of lacking. You can tell they tried (as when you walk by people and they say stuff like "Hey look, it's the Hero of Kvatch!"), but it falls short, especially when compared to the wide range of personalities one could have in Fallout.

Keep in mind that theres no talent trees in Oblivion. It isnt just about gaining levels - your skills go up as you use them.

The solution is to play morrowind and its expansions, which were far better imo than oblivion. While I liked the who idea of random dungeons popping up, it doesn't have the depth of morrowind.

Agreed. Several months ago I decided to give a go of it again and went back into Morrowind. Despite its aged appearance I still found it to be fun, until a power outage messed up my save. Yet I do not think i've had even a thought of playing Oblivion in years.

Sorry about the mod Biker, I do have a version of it saved on my computer if you are still interested. Though i'm not sure at the moment what patch it would work for.
