Civilization V

Civilization V, due for release on the 21st, is now available for pre-loading.

Woot woot! I saw from Steam that I'm not the only person who's acquired the pre-purchase. Should be some good times!

Yay for preloading!

Too bad I had to bounce through a proxy in the United States to even order the stupid game.

I'm tempted to buy it...

I thought Civ4 was okay, nothing too special. I had trouble completing a whole game due to lack of interest. But this looks to be more exciting. Hexagons are a pretty cool shape.

Found a good gameplay video: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/9553042

Ok, so thats part one and I now got a chance to watch it. It covers an hour of early gameplay. Some very interesting new things in the game. However, they did not cover workers, roads, and trades at that point. I'm now going to watch part 2 which they transfer into a saved game in the industrial age. I'll update again after I watch that.
PS, they all mention steam cloud benefits!

Ok, and part two basically went over resources/workers a bit. You now have to pay gold to maintain roads. Went over great people a bit, city defense, and most of all war.

And lastly in this last week's of wait, here is a list of fan gathered information: http://well-of-souls.com/civ/

I'll probably buy this, I still play ~10 hours a week of Civ IV:BTS, but I'm flat broke for now! :(

I dunno if I'll get it. It looks really neat, but I don't seem to know what the problem with Civ 4 was that they needed to make another one. History hasn't even progressed all that much since Civ 4!

Either way, I could end up getting it simply on principle and something to do with playing with people... at the same time, money will very likely be tight...

We'll see, really. We'll see.

Good preview vids. Some things I'm stoked about, some things not so much, but I'm definitely looking forward to what the Civ team has in store this go-around :-)

The most important historical event since then is the decline in revenues generated by Civ IV and it's expansions.

Good response plinko!

What looks good in Civ5:
Embarkment, being able to cross gulfs is really gonna change combat.
Combat/range combat, the new one unit rule is great. As seen in the second gameplay video forts will really get more use now. Holding all small land passes will be fun and siege weapons seem like they will be a lot more fun. However, I do see myself raging from allied AI getting in my way.
Navy, navy was always fun but never very useful. Now with ranged combat it seems they can hold a coast line and really damage units before your army fights them.
Barbarians, I loved them in Civ3 but not so much in Civ4. I always put them on raging barbarians. Now with encampments I think they will be a lot more fun.
City-States, I loved the vassal feature in Beyond the Sword. I think this will work similar to how I used that function.

What I don't like:
It seems the game is releasing pretty small. From what has been seen there aren't very many techs, units, buildings, etc. Likely these will all be released as DLC or expansion packs. As you already noticed you have to pay an extra $10 just to get another civilization.
Trade, there also haven't been much information released on trade. Civ 4 had a great trade system but it wasn't very detailed or controllable. Would love to see more trade stuff come in.

So apparently the strategy guide already got released in some places, so if you're like me and have to research everything before you play, that website I posted earlier did a massive data upload.
