By Warhammer -TPF-

So, you're playing random and need to know how to kill a HWG when you're not a HWG? Here are my tactics with each class on killing them.
First off, HWG's are a big, slow target. Real slow. HWG's are actually over twice as wide as a scout. Second, they have no long range punch. This said, in order to methodically kill HWG's, use a weapon that's accurate from a distance - the nailgun, railgun, and sniper rifle are prime choices.

The only classes that can effectively melee with a HWG are the pyro and the spy. In most cases, a HWG will mow down a spy that's closing with him. I've found that only pyros can survive closing with a HWG long enough to confuse and immolate him to death.

Scouts: Never, ever, ever let a HWG get you in his sights. You will not survive a direct burst of fire from his gatling gun. The only chance to kill a HWG is to use the element of suprise, and use the nailgun or crowbar. The nailgun can be used from a distance if you have a stationary HWG in your sights. Circle strafing with the nailgun can be effective if your target is consumed with other enemies at the time. Keep in mind, a healthy HWG will need to sustain about 8-12 continuous seconds of nails in the head to die. If you get into a circle strafing motion, try to run close behind him and drop caltrops to slow him down and cause more damage.

Medic: The super nailgun is twice as effective as the regular nailgun at killing HWG's. Circle strafing in a close quarters situation may get you a HWG kill if he doesn't get you square in his sights. Otherwise, just try leading a distant HWG with nails, then close for the kill. Again, it is normally only successful if your target is focused on something else.. if his purpose is to destroy you, RUN.

Soldiers: It takes 5 square rocket hits to kill a HWG. Leading your target is key. Jumping around to confuse him and not let the HWG lead you with his fire is key to your survival. If you hit four times and have not died by the time you get a fifth rocket in the tube, you have him. Stay as far away from him as possible without sacrificing rocket accuracy.

Snipers: Single fully charged shot (hold at least 3 seconds) to the head. 'nuff said. Otherwise, it will take at least two chest shots to get the same effect. If he closes with you, RUN.

Engineers: Two words: EMP grenade. This thing even makes the HWG scared. It will not kill a fully healed HWG, especially if he has dropped excess ammo, but it will put him near death. Your super shotgun will finish him off before his gatling gun spins up.

Demoman: This class is the hardest for me to kill a HWG with. Pipebombs will be the most effective means, but this works best as an ambush, not so much in a close quarters fight. If you get caught in plain sight of a HWG, run and shoot grenades straight up in the air. If he follows you, the "presents" you leave behind should deter him from further pursuit. If you can weaken the HWG with grenades and pipebombs, use your shotgun to finish him off.

Spy: Stealth is your best bet, a single knife to the back of the head will kill any class including HWG. If you get caught, whip out your nailgun and engage him from a distance scout and medic style.

Pyro: See my post on "How to be a better pyromaniac". Same rules apply.

HWG vs. HWG: Whatever you do, DO NOT CROUCH. I've seen (and tried) this before, and all it does is put your head right in line with his gatling gun. This is not conducive to survival. Doing a strafe-jump movement causes more damage to go to your legs instead of your chest and head, which inflicts less damage to you. After 3 seconds of firefighting, prime a grenade. If your target is backing away, toss the grenade. If he closes with you and kills you, the grenade should kill him too.

I'll add one thing to this that has been extremely helpful to me. As a sniper make sure you take the extra time to get a headshot. If you don't have the time to aim then you should be running anyway. Also I have noticed that it's harder to get a headshot when the HWG is shooting, whether at you or anyone else. Since I started taking time on my shots with HWG's my headshot percentage skyrocketed. Well at least a good amount of it is HWG's. Hope this helps someone.

There is a very effective way for a sniper to kill a hw if he's being chased. I actually flashbanged someone and moved out of their sight and shot them in the face. I can't tell you how good the flashbangs are when they hit someone in they eyes, they are the mother of all escape/distraction tools.

You can kill an hw as just about any class by circle strafing. It is a great tactical tool. I first started using in my Goldeneye days when me and 3 friends would dm at someones house. Ahh, the joys of console dm, as well as LAN.

I like to let HW's chase me around a corner where my SG is waiting for them. All the while priming an EMP so if the SG doesn't get em (they usually take a rocket or two before backtracking wearing down their armour just abit) Then, I just frisbie the EMP right at their head. Works about 85% of the time. If they have a mirv primed after taking a few RPG rounds they will be dead before they can release it, therefore it will usually hit the ground where their body dropped and will not take out my SG. Next HW please.

one tip to add to killing hw as spy:

first of all, as spy pick ur battles carefully from who ur up against and if there r sgs. obviously if he realizes ur a spy and he is not near u dont run at him. but if he is right on u and he isnt fooled by ur disguise, prime a grenade right away. do half circle strafes around him (close) while swinging ur knife. while hes is spinning around trying to shoot u, one of ur knife swings is bound to catch his back, or at least wear him down. if hes still alive, when the nade is ready, take a step back and toss him ur present. the only problem i've had with this b4 is that sometimes i kill the hw and forget about the nade, blowing myself up, hehe. that and a guy named Xexre

im new at hw but if ur the hw in this battle against spy or a pyro, prime a grenade right away (i always prime grenades first in 1 vs 1 battles) and jump away from him while firing. if he is too close and is circling u, grenade hug while shooting him. ur armor will protect u but he will probably die from it after being at least warn down by ac. i know its cheap but hey ur playin hw. not sayin hw is cheap or takes no skill, but after playing it for a while, i'll just say a beginner could do much better as hw than ne other class

Warhammer that is not totally true. I have found that almost every class but scout(someitmes i can get a kill on HWG with a scout) can take down an HW , soldier is especially easy. 4 rockets and 1 nade and hes done for. Also demo. You can got those easily camping HWG's taht are on bags in forners with 3 to 4 pipe bombs. The richochet off wall and always hit them.

I ahve found that the easiest way with explosives is if they are in a corner you have to just drill them becuase the explosive plasts just swallow them up like turkey on thanksgiving.

Can somebody clarify STRAFING for me. I thought it means to move around an oppenent avoiding getting hit while striking your enemy. I have been told that it is to go side to side, but that means I would have to change my left and right keys to make me go side to side to do that, and I hate that.

I don't use the turn keys. I use the strafe ones. They allow me to run sideways while moving forward. It's good for hugging walls while looking in the other direction.
If I want to turn I use the mouse.
I can see using the turn keys sometimes but binding those would not be convienent for me.
I can't imagine not haveing strafe. They will change your direction while rocket jumping.

Go into half-life TFC opening screen and click on configuration than controls.
Scroll down the list until you get to movement commands. There you will find the forward/ backward/ turn left/right and strafe/left/right.
you can highlight them and bind keys for there use. If you are using the standard issue key bindings you may want to go to page two of the general Rambling forum and find KEYBOARD BINDINGS. There are a bunch of different peoples ideas on the best set up.
Great reading and highly recommended.
With a properly set up key board thats comfortable to you even the sky is not the limit!
