The “Beat the Boss” 2015 Fantasy All-Sports Challenge!

The “Beat the Boss” 2015 Fantasy All-Sports Challenge!

Greetings, all! To mark my final decision to officially change my name to “Boss Llama” from “Alizée Fan,” I thought it might be nice to have some sort of contest. Specifically, a contest in which you all get to beat me at stuff!

As you may have noticed, we’ve had a fair number of fantasy sports games around here recently. You may also have noticed that I play in a lot of them, by which I mean all of them and then some. This got me thinking – I believe it would be fun to have a year-long challenge encompassing all the various fantasy sports seasons! Specifically, a challenge for people to come beat me in these sports! The best part is, as several of us have demonstrated with performances over the last year or two, you don’t need to know much about the sports in question to read the numbers and do well! Considering how little I know about some of these sports myself, I should be a juicy target.

Here’s what I propose to do:
- Over the course of this year, I intend to participate in a great many fantasy leagues, including any that other people do around here. I shall post about all of them here on the forums.
- I’ll track all the points for each participant in these leagues, to be added together in a single large final score.
- Scoring for this challenge will be based on raw points in each league, and will only be compared to others within our leagues. All scores will be standardized so that no one sport or event is worth more than any other.
- If you “Beat the Boss” at the end of the year, you’ll get a fabulous prize! There’s no limit on how many people can win!
- For leagues I’m running, I may offer small prizes for individual league champions as well, though that’ll be posted for each individual league. If it’s somebody else’s league, prizes are up to them!

- The scoring system I’ll use actually means that even if you lose by a fair margin in a given league, you stay very close in the overall points! A single good result could easily overcome several bad ones. This also means that everybody should give it a try! Even if you don’t know the sport in question, join the league and give it a go for fun! If you happen to do poorly it won’t hurt you much, and you might just surprise yourself! I certainly don’t know anything about several of the sports I’ll be trying a hand at, and will be going in to many of them with zero experience. You’ve nothing to fear!

Scoring will be as follows:
- The score of each participant shall be calculated as its percentage of the top score in that league, with the top scorer being 100%.
- Each player shall receive points equal to that percentage (rounded to the nearest whole number)
- At the end of the year, the scores are added up and the winner declared

Scoring example:
- If Player A earns 520 points in a given league, with Player B earning 510 and Player C 480, all scores in the league would be divided by 520 (the highest score) to find what percentage they are. Player A would receive 100 points (As the top scorer always will, for being 100% of the top score). Player B would receive 98 points, and Player C would receive 92 points (as their scores are 98.08% and 92.31% of the highest score, respectively)

The fine print:
- All leagues will be free - no money shall be involved. This is for fun only!
- I generally will be using ESPN leagues, as I have an account with them and several years of playing there. If other people are running fantasy leagues elsewhere though, I’ll happily join and post about it.
- I won’t count more than one of any given type of league. That is to say, I won’t have three fantasy football leagues and count them all, or count multiple entries in a bracket competition. If we have a situation like Fantasy Football this year where there were multiple Ville leagues for the same thing, only one of the leagues will be the official Beat the Boss league.
- Fabulousness of Fabulous Prizes is subjective, but I’ll try to make it cool.

The events are all wrapped up, and we had one person manage to pull it out. Congratulations to Coyote, who dominated across the year, winning three of the four events and doing pretty darn well in the other one as well! Here are the final standings:

Events will be linked and scores posted in this post, which will be kept updated! It seems a bit unfair to start the year off with events already complete, so we'll start the game going forward from today, and it will continue through around this time next year. The final event of the Challenge will be the finals of the NFL and the end of the College Bowl season at the beginning of 2016.

--------

Event One: Premier League Soccer (Posted Jan 07, 2015)

The first event in the 2015 "Beat the Boss" challenge will be in the Ville FC League, operated by Daryldime! Segment Two of the Premier League season starts on January 10th. I have never participated in a fantasy soccer league before, and don't know the sport well, so this is a great opportunity to start the year off ahead of me! Head on over and join up!

Final standings for this game:
Coyote 1083 (100%)
YNWA 1062 (98%)
Boss Llama 992 (92%)
Daryldime 960 (89%)
Gruelsicle 954 (88%)
OmgOhnoes 948 (88%)
Lemons 941 (87%)
Zero 902 (83%)

Nerevarine 849 (78%)
Larry 827 (76%)
Crusher 824 (76%)

--------

Event Two: Major League Baseball (Posted Feb 19, 2015)

The second event in the 2015 "Beat the Boss" challenge will be in the Ville Baseball 2015, operated by me! With Premiere League raging on, another sport already jumps in. I haven't played fantasy baseball before either, though I do understand the sport a lot better than soccer, so this it'll be interesting to see how it goes. Click that link to join up!

Final standings for this game:
Coyote 81 (100%)
Boss Llama 79 (98%)
Kokomo 75 (93%)
Beltway 70.5 (87%)

Gruelsicle 28 (35%)

--------

Event Three: National Football League (Posted July 25, 2015)

The third event in the 2015 "Beat the Boss" challenge will be in the Ville Fantasy Football Standard League, operated by me! This is our longest running fantasy sport, and I've done pretty well at it the last few years, so come knock me off my perch!

Final standings for this game:
Coyote 1299 (100%)
YNWA 1273 (98%)
OverCharged 1237 (95%)
Gizanked 1200 (92%)

Event Four: National Hockey League (September 28, 2015)

The fourth event in the 2015 "Beat the Boss" challenge will be the TheVille "Hookey" League, operated by Daryl! I don't know one end of the stick from another, so come take to the ice and pick up another sport to fill in the moment baseball leaves off!

I'm pretty nearly with you on that one! I do well at Fantasy Football, but other than that, I have little or no experience at it. Only way to change that is to play though, which is why I'm doing this challenge :-D

Six teams so far in the FC league, 2 more days to sign up!

In response to a query, some of the various events that I plan to include in the challenge over the course of the year include full seasons of Fantasy Baseball and Fantasy Football, Premier League soccer (Starts tomorrow! See above), NCAA Basketball tournament challenges (both men's and women's), the College Football Pick'Em and Bown Mania, the Best Ball Majors golf tournament, and maybe a couple others. Join up, and keep an eye on this thread for new event posts!

Premiere League rages on, and the next segment of Beat the Boss[/url] is here!

Fantasy Baseball!

I'm already well behind the lead in soccer - can you bury me here, or will I claw my way back? Only one way to find out!

A third of the way through the fantasy soccer event, and seven people are beating the boss! OmgOhnoes leapt in to the lead with a big performance in the last week, while I managed to have my worst performance yet!

Don't forget to sign up for Fantasy Baseball to continue beating the boss as the season goes on!

Alas that Daryl's Arsenal dismantled my Liverpool side. Perhaps a revenge game in the FA Cup Finals is in the works.....

I managed to pick up a player from the Yankees in the Baseball League who I will keep on my team come hell or high water. Robert Refsnyder is likely to be the 2nd baseman of the future for the Yanks and also happens to have been a guy I coached on our championship football team! Great guy, amazing athlete and a fun free agent pickup for me. Well worth the spot he will take up on my roster!
