Two Computers, Two Interweb Speeds

Post by BETTEH » Fri Dec 13, 2013 3:22 pm

So the other day I attempted to host up a Zero Gear server, and came across an odd problem.

On my normal PC I get roughly 50mbps down, and 10mbps up. When the other computer is connected it gets 10mbps down and 276kbps up. A few things I tried was updating the firmware for my linksys router and a different cord. Both to no avail. I am thinking about throwing in a NIC card for it although its a rather old PC running on XP, anyone have any suggestions for a cheap card or perhaps any other trouble shooting ideas?

The first test, to determine if it's the computer or the network equipment, is just to switch which cable is plugged in to which computer. If it reverses the problem it's the networking hardware, if it retains the problem it's the computer. My guess is that it's the computer.

If you're running the linked box stock, it has a number of things that might be limiting it. The most obvious/likely in my mind is that its old 10/100 NIC card might be set to only operate at 10mbps speed. The NIC might have to be manually compelled to use the higher speed option, though I don't know how to do that specifically. Start hunting in Control Panel in the networking options. Less likely but possible is that it may be bottlenecking on the RAM, as 2GB might not be enough to give the cache needed for higher speed networking while still running the computer and the game. The FSB might also not be able to handle the data load, though I believe that issue is generally a thing of the more distant past.
