Re: What constitutes as skill to you?
Back to the task at hand, I generally do notice that people in a similar place ranking in the stats, with a similar number of hours played, tend to seem about the same skill level.
Whereas people who are above me with less time played tend to be those that own me harshly.

Re: What constitutes as skill to you?
that point would hold true for any normal deathmatch based fps...however in a team objective based fps...rogue behavior is absolutely dis-countable...with teamwork being the only real measure (as nebulous as it is)BisonJerk wrote:My point was that teamwork does not equal skill. And vice versa that rogue behavior does not equal a lack of skill. That things are that black and white. You need to look at a sum of factors to determine skill, not just one.somedude wrote:Your original point was that skills associated with teamwork were only necessary for league play and not a factor on public servers. My argument is that teamwork is a factor of skill in a team game regardless of the format. There are no statistics gathered for these intangible traits or properties that can be formed into "measurable criteria". There are no statistics for key factors of teamwork like effective communication, which several people in this thread have acknowledged as a trait of a skilled player in TF2. But just because it can't be tracked as a statistic to "measure" does not discount the value it brings to either league or public play.
Ultimately then, I stand by my original post that lists out various trackable stats that I hold myself to. I would simply state that I consider the measure of teamwork to be demonstrated within the combined trackable stats.

Re: What constitutes as skill to you?
There is no one skill; there are many different skills. Teamwork is a skill, communication is a skill, shooting people is a skill, bunnyhopping is a skill, knowing when to do what is a skill, and there are many other skills. This thread seems to be about which skills are most useful in TF2, which is probably teamwork and communication.

I think this is a good assessment, though I'd just say that the best players are able make use of all skills.Stevo wrote:There is no one skill; there are many different skills. Beyond that personal skill is, well, personal. Each of us is going to hold ourselves to different standards, and that's fine.

i like what this guy has to say. except for the people that scripted their bunny hopping, then it isn't a skill.
the big thing i think people need to remember with games is if it is stupid, but it works, then it isn't stupid.

everything stevo does is scripted...there would be no other way he could do it then...Gizanked wrote:Stevo wrote:There is no one skill; there are many different skills. Re: What constitutes as skill to you?
Hah, good point Stevo. Just sayin I feel a need to perform well myself every game or I tend to quit or feel a little sore about doing not so goodStevo wrote:There is no one skill; there are many different skills.
