Error instead of characters

Hey, has anyone come across this? All of the characters are gone and replaced with ERROR. It's been about a week since I last played and steam did an update, other than that, no other changes have been made on my system.

My hardware is macbookpro 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM running the latest updates to OSX 10.6.5

Have you tried verifying your game cache? Maybe something got corrupted.

This has happened to me before, I do believe verifying solved it for me, but it was very early after TF2's release.
