New Mod Recommendation

Tekkit now is neat and all, but personally (As in my own experience) it's lagy and too big. The first can be chalked up to my connection, but vanilla isn't nearly as bad. The second is again maybe only me but too many mods leaves me unfocused on what I want to do, so it's not more fun to play than TV5.
When the server is scrubed clean for new mods, I recommend the latest version of Thumacraft (or w/e version works for the higher powers). It is a very good mod, filled with comfy feelings and awesome wizard powers. I know (now) that it's twitchy with all the other mods and can only be added in a custom packet. So I'm fine with a Tekkit server (as in modded server) with just Thaumcraft. I don't know the villans experience with it but if you like building up to getting awesome gear, then it is for you.
Also, can I also ask for future servers to maybe have less mods, if possible? Again I felt all over the place wondering what to make to be energy and resource independent.
