Texture Packs
I've seen a few Minecraft videos with people using texture packs that are really cool looking and it made me wonder if anyone out there is using a texture pack?
If so, which one and do you recommend it?

Nah. I've seen some interesting looking texture packs, but I like it just the way it is.

Re: Texture Packs
I'm with Carpe on this one. There are some skilled folks out there making cool textures, but I don't feel any need or desire to use them. The game's pretty rockin' as it presently looks.TheCarpe wrote:Nah. I've seen some interesting looking texture packs, but I like it just the way it is.

Re: Texture Packs
Thirded.
I like the game just as it is. Sure i would like to have cobble or stone that look red, but I wouldn't go so far as to have a skin for cobble or stone just to acheive that.
Minecraft is just one of those games that shouldn't be tinkered with like that.

Re: Texture Packs
I was running a high detail texture pack for a bit, but because it requires patching the game files and what-not, got reverted back during the beta. May look at going back to it when I get on that computer again.
The one I use was entitled "BumpMaft". He uses bump mapped images, flattens them, and then packages them. It really does look good. Link to the pack is here.

It honestly doesn't look better, just different.

Re: Texture Packs
When I'm out exploring with other people, it's useful if you're all seeing the same thing. So for this reason I'm sticking with the default textures.

Re: Texture Packs
Agreed here. Also, when I build stuff in multiplayer, I want to know what others are seeing, not just myself.Marf wrote:When I'm out exploring with other people, it's useful if you're all seeing the same thing. So for this reason I'm sticking with the default textures.
That's not to say some of the packs aren't attractive - that bumpmapped one has some beautiful work in it. I just don't like the trade-off.

Re: Texture Packs
How do you know that the people you are adventuring with dont have texture packs installed? Is there really a guarantee that you are seeing the exact same thing?
I installed a pack yesterday and it drastically helped the missing chunk issue. There were still a few but it was nothing near what it was before. Maybe there was an update yesterday I missed but if not then I credit it all to the texture pack.

Re: Texture Packs
Only very few texture packs are very dramatic, and it's only really textures. You're still seeing dirt for dirt and clay for clay. Sometimes things do get slightly different colors (clay being a big one), but having looked over 30-40 packs I don't see why consistency of viewing experience among players would even enter anyone's mind.

Re: Texture Packs
I've tried a few texture packs and now that the game supports them (and you don't have to re-download everything to restore default) I'm willing to throw out the incredibly handy dandy painterly pack which is customizable for your pleasure. Granted, I don't like seeing modifications to monsters or critters. Those aught to stay the same, and no amount of albino creeper will make me change my mind.
