It's relatively rare. If you're on TV12, all the clay within 2 days walk of spawn is surely long harvested. If you're doing SP, just keep exploring anywhere sand and water meet, you'll find clay eventually.

Could I search somewhere else?
I mean, not that I'm to excited about it, but I would love some more decoration to the immense glass house I'm building.

It's usually mixed in with sand, I missed it for the longest time because I mistook it for stone.

In many texture packs they change clay to look more different than stone so it's easier to find. The Quandry pack I started using makes clay red instead of grey, for example.

I actually found a large amount right near spawn yesterday...
