So, past couple of days I was starting to have random problems in L4D2 and TF2 where my Driver would crash, taking either the game with me or on occasion Windows entirely. At first, I checked the usual suspects - made sure the fan was spinning, case was clear of dust, etc. Eventually went to check the temperature on the card - was sitting at 63 Celcius idle after a reboot!

Turns out, nVidia x64 drivers on Windows 7 have a problem with fan speeds.....in the way that auto doesn't spin the fans higher to cool the card off when under stress. The solution? Run a little program called EVGA Precision and manually set the fan speed. I've got mine at 75%, and it runs great.

Needless to say, I won't be buying nVidia again.

I think you had flaky drivers. Which does sometimes happen I guess. I have Windows 7 x64 and an nVidia card. Works perfectly, no complaints at all. Are you sure it couldnt be anything else?

same here. Only problems I have had is when i forget to update my drivers. Win 7 x64 with nVidia has been great for me

For the record I had this same problem. I'm not ready to put the blame straight on nvidia though. There's a lot of variables involved.

If you ask me, fan speeds should not be controlled by the OS by default. I miss APM.

It does seem to be a rare problem, but there have been other people on the nVidia forums with the same problem as I had (Actually where I found the solution).

Will take a deeper look today most likely - it is most likely an isolated problem with specific variables that cause it.

Looks like it's still in the 196.75 drivers. As well too, it may be that cards generally were overheating, but my card may have had a lower threshhold for heat (Mine seemed to be crashing at around 85 degrees, while other reports have the card running over a hundred while still apparently stable).

I'm not crazy (At least not in this regard)!

I have always had to use programs to manually set my fan speed when gaming since upgrading away from my geforce2 card.

This is nothing new for me. Most card brands will provide you with a utility to manage your card's clocks and fan speed. Nvidia itself had a program for it for most of the 8xxx and 9xxx series.

Yeah I don't have an issue at all. Auto does fine except in BC2 in which case the card heats up faster than Auto rises so you need to set it to at least 75%.

It's officially a problem with the new drivers, although a few people are still having problems with the old .21 drivers. What makes it worse is that there's no manual way to control it in Windows 7 without a third party app. It's just hurp de durp.
