Haven't listened yet, still working the download. Good work on releasing it for free, but it is just a big publicity stunt. The more people that download this the more money that NIN is going to make, this particular album being free or not. I read somewhere that they (or he) could stand to make something like 70 million (can't remember exactly how much, but it was ALOT) from this album.

I dont blame the guy for getting paid for his work... 70 mil sounds a little wrong but he would be stupid not to work out some way to be paid and treat his fans with a free download. In addition I think he will be re-releasing this free album on cd/vinyl in a couple months. Prolly with some "bonus" material no doubt to bring in $ from the collectors and die-hard fans.

Don't bands usually make more money from touring than album sales anyway?

NIN is without record label.

Not sure what that means since I thought nothing records was his doing. But maybe it just means they are no longer with interscope. Never mind Nothing Studio is no longer either...

From what I have read from magazines and around the net, the music industry (recording labels, etc.) took a heavy blow with the Radiohead thing a while back. You guys are right that artists don't make much from the CD sales, but that is why many of them now want to do something similar to what Radiohead did. They want to eliminate the middle man. I guess with today's technology and world-wide distribution via the internet it makes it very possible.
The music industry is way behind the technology curve and they are now paying for it. What's funny is....is how long ago did the Napster thing happen? Wasn't that like 6 or 7 years ago? They knew then that people wanted their music via the internet, and with itunes they have proved that they would pay reasonable money for it.
Anyway, I think this is a good way to get out of the way things have always been. I was tired of buying a CD with 10 tracks on it for $12.99 that only had one good song on it.

The one thing a lot of people miss is that radiohead was not the first to do this, it was actually prince, but he did it to early and it failed.
