How much money would you have to see to pick it up?

Post by black_and_blue » Sun Feb 02, 2014 7:22 pm

Just to satisfy my own curiosity. Myself, I do pick up nickels, but feel a bit silly doing it.

For simplicity sake, use your own currency, and we'll just say USD / CAD / GBP / EUR / AUD are all exchanging at par, and same with any other currency that's not off by more than double or half.

I pick up pennies anytime I see one laying around.

Pennies I sometimes pick up, nickels and up always. I like coins in general from a numismatic perspective, so I love seeing what's on the ground.

A quarter. Good for parking meters.

When my daughter was little (a couple of decades ago), I used to throw a few pennies and marbles out in the front yard where they played just to watch how excited they got about "finding treasure."

Now, I use pennies for two purposes:
1 - As pie crust weights when when I need a partially baked crust.
2 - To test fast-food cashiers' basic math skills by giving almost exact change (Them, "Your total is $4.58." Me, "Here's $4.83").

I found a $5 bill while raking leaves a few months ago!

Back when I was much younger, before driving age, I started picking up everything I saw just to see how much cash I could eventually accumulate "for free." I can't remember how long I kept at it but I ended up with well in excess of $50. Of course I had to hand roll it to bring it to the bank, we didn't have those fancy CoinStar machines near me back then.

The main thing that makes me hesitate now is the thought that I have no clue where that coin has been...

Doesn't that apply to any coin you get from any source?

You'll have to explain the first one to me, very curious.

The second had me laughing at my desk! For some reason (the high school teacher in me?) the idea is fantastic fun. I can totally picture you doing it too.

Pie crust weights... This explains it as good as anything else. http://bakingbites.com/2007/11/how-to-use-pie-weights/

Yes, the second shows my evil practical joke side. I started doing it after getting TOO MUCH change back a couple of times and then having to argue with the cashier to give the extra back (I had the manager called on me once, and it was great watching the manager's face as the cashier explained I was trying to do something wrong by giving them money back).

I pick up everything :3 But sometimes I'm too lazy to pick them up if they aren't $1 or more
