Woot!Valve announced the first game add-on for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead 2, is in development and targeted for release in early 2010.
Dubbed “The Passing,” the first game add-on for L4D2 brings the original Left 4 Dead (L4D1) Survivors down south for a meeting with the L4D2 cast, while delivering new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay for the PC and Xbox 360.
Targeted for release in early spring, “The Passing” takes place just after the Dead Center campaign of L4D2. Set in a small town in rural Georgia, players assume the role of the L4D2 Survivors as they meet with the L4D1 characters.
In addition to the new co-operative campaign and associated narrative, “The Passing” will include new arenas for Survival, Versus and Scavenge mode and introduce a new co-operative challenge mode of play. The Passing will also include a new “uncommon common” zombie class, melee weapon, and firearm.
“The Passing will become the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign,” said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. “It will also be a huge offering of new gameplay content, with something new for every game mode plus a new uncommon common and weaponry.”
Exclusively available for the Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 sets a new benchmark for co-operative action games. The title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaws, frying pans, axes, baseball bats, and more.
With the AI Director 2.0, L4D’s dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players’ performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.
Finally, with new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original, featuring more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, new Survival maps, and the new competitive game mode, Scavenge.
Left 4 Dead 2: The Passing is targeted for release in early spring for the PC and Xbox 360. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Darn, sounds like only the new Survivors are playable. How cool would it be if we could mix and match to our preference?
Or, even better, a double campaign where each stage there's a level for the original survivors and then one for the new ones - sort of a 'we'll go over here and start the generator and you go over there to radio for help.
One can dream. . .

Well a lot of DLC comes out for both PC and 360, it's free for us, not for them. I think it's Microsofts rule that they have to charge something.

Well xbox's updates for any game online have been charged for points while on most PC's the games expansions patchwise have been free. so if the DLC is a patch oriented addon to LFD2 it will most likely be free for the PC user. Otherwise you'll be spending another 20+ dollars for an "expansion"
I personally hope for the free version =D

Well, at least this time Valve didn't technically promise us free DLC for the PC, so people don't have a right to beach about anything.
(Having said that, I'm aware they still will, but it will just be unjustified)
Edit @Guardian: Mr. S means that you claim L4D DLC in the topic title, when in fact it is L4D2.

Would be impossible to do that cuz then what would the ending be like if its only 4 players but theres 8 survivors? Will the other 4 be bots? I say they come out with and 8 player co-op and even 8v8 campaign but then they would have to make the game even harder making normal on it more like advanced and so on. Also they would possibly have to make the campaigns much longer and i think this is what theyre talking about, an 8 player co-op and an 8v8 versus mode and for the other campaigns too.
As for the DLC i think i read somewhere that DLC would always be free for PC users, i dont really know but im going for the free version.
I was thinking you'd alternate, do one group, then another. Or, it could be 8 players with each group of four taking one survivor set. Or, since we can play 8 players at once in versus, they could balance the campaign for 8 humans at once.
Hmmm... I think i know what u mean now, switch between groups in different areas and at the finale maybe 2 different endings? First group gets to their finale they get into a boat,plane,copter,etc... and once its done they maybe show a little cut scene calling the other group telling them they're on their way to pick them up. Well now its the second groups turn to do their finale they have to wait for the first group of survivors to come get them.
I would think it would be a long campaign tho maybe each group has 3 maps to go through instead of the current 5 making them short campaigns like "the parish", gotta say im liking how this is coming out now that i see it in a different way. Its a really good idea if its done right its all gotta connect really nicely, but at this moment i really cant think of anything that the groups would have to do separately in order to get out alive.
