I still say there shouldn't be a record kept of these until there is a plugin that times door open to door close times. Slow loaders have a negative impact on speed runs and it kinda discourages me from even attempting anything serious.

Re: L4D2 Ville Speed Run Records
Dead Center's current Ville record is 13 minutes regularly, or 12 minutes on Gib Fest. I've done a 12 in a regular game too, though don't have a picture :-/
This Thread has a bunch of times, names, etc.

Sounds like I have a weekend project! I'll see if I can write a SM plugin that does this.TTHREAZ wrote:I still say there shouldn't be a record kept of these until there is a plugin that times door open to door close times. If you can do this, I will eat my hat (meaning I will give you one in TF2).frostdillicus wrote:Sounds like I have a weekend project! I will comb through that thread and update the front page.

Yeah, I'm surprised my name is on one of those lists since I am a slow loader. Of course, I imagine it will not be much longer until that 17 minutes is replaced.TTHREAZ wrote:I still say there shouldn't be a record kept of these until there is a plugin that times door open to door close times. I agree that it would be a fantastic idea for a plugin that counts from door open to door closed. Frost, have fun this weekend with that.
Re: L4D2 Ville Speed Run Records
I played on a L4D server once that had something like what we're looking for. I can look to see if there's something out there.

Re: L4D2 Ville Speed Run Records
I dont know that it should be door open to door close time. Part of the aspect of the speed run is that you have to heal as fast as possible, or forgo healing and just run. If people can take 2 or 3 minutes in a safe room, then it really takes a lot away from the essence of a speed run I think.
Could you write a plugin that starts counting 3 seconds after all 4 people have loaded?

Yes, I probably could but I won't. Door to door time is the only consistently fair way to measure performance that can not be abused.
And frankly, if you aren't healing when the saferoom door is closing you are doing it wrong anyway.

Agreed, which is why I would think that having a few extra minutes in the safe room while you wait for everyone to load, clear out the zombies in the immediate vicinity of the safe room, and make sure you have the gun you really want... sort of detracts from a speed run.frostdillicus wrote: And frankly, if you aren't healing when the saferoom door is closing you are doing it wrong anyway.

Re: L4D2 Ville Speed Run Records
Which is the exact reason your method of tracking could be abused. Want more time to clear the zombies in front of the door? Have one person drop, once the door is clear, have them rejoin, timer starts, you now get a free run for the first bit of the map.metacide wrote: Agreed, which is why I would think that having a few extra minutes in the safe room while you wait for everyone to load, clear out the zombies in the immediate vicinity of the safe room, and make sure you have the gun you really want... sort of detracts from a speed run.
I'm pretty sure your guys style of speed run has always been different than the style my group usually plays. We DESPISE the idea of leaving anyone behind just so someone can get to the safe room faster. We don't consider it a successful map unless everyone makes it to the end, outside of the usual deaths that are unavoidable. We have only ever cared about performance in the map itself, and could honestly care less how much time we spend in the safe room. The tension in speed running a map comes from the actual map. Sitting in the safe room for a few minutes while someone goes and gets a drink, or in the case of some people takes 5 minutes to load, doesn't have any bearing on the validity of score in my opinion.
Re: L4D2 Ville Speed Run Records
Yeah, rushing through the entire campaign without any exterior factors interrupting gameplay is pretty rough.

So, after fiddling for about 2 hours I think I have found most of what I need to write the plugin, the only problem is I am missing one key event. Once I find that one, I should have an alpha version tomorrow or Monday.
