ping/latency issue

Post by MESSIAH » Sun Mar 24, 2013 4:45 am

Hi Dog, fellow left4dod'rs, forum members and admins,

Has anyone else been having problems with higher ping/latency for the last few months? I'm in NZ and it has permanently gone up by 50 - 70 ms on both servers.

I used to have a ping of 150 - 175 on IX (66.240.202.11) and a ping of 190 - 220 on IV (68.232.171.169) until around the 22nd December.

I usually play IX more often as lower ping and I didn't notice any problems with lag/gameplay (apart from lag when players join) all of last year until end December.

I am currently getting 235ms on average on IX and 275ms on IV.

It's certainly noticeable during gameplay ... I notice the extra ms delay even when just turning on the flashlight ... everything gets delayed/affected.

For the last few months I have been trying to get my ISP to fix the problem but they say it must be the servers I'm playing on.

I've been trying to work out if others pings have gone up as well but it doesn't look like it to me?

Still been playing but not as much as it just isn't the same playing at 235ms compared to the 165ms I used to get on IX.

ps. I have tried new adsl modem/router, cables, filters, different phone jack, new windows install, only running Steam/DOD Source, interleaving turned off - even different pc. My main pc is pretty well spec'd so it's not a lack of hardware.

Any help appreciated ...

thanks

pravda

Other forums have reported that this may be an issue with the last DoDS update (or maybe Source too)
If both servers are affected, it will probably be at your end. Living in NZ, I guess IX is closest to you.

Have you tried a tracert yet, to see where the ping gets worst?

Hi Dog,

Have current tracert (and pathping) but unfortunately I don't have any to compare to from when it was normal/lower.

Current tracert to IX:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\tracert 66.240.202.11

Tracing route to fc720211.aspadmin.net [66.240.202.11]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 15 ms 2 ms <1 ms my adsl modem/router
2 30 ms 29 ms 30 ms my isp
3 30 ms 30 ms 30 ms my isp
4 30 ms 30 ms 30 ms my isp
5 30 ms 31 ms 30 ms x7-1-0-101.akbr5.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.234.61]
6 31 ms 30 ms 30 ms ae4-3.akbr4.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.232.105]
7 182 ms 218 ms 182 ms ae2-3.sjbr2.global-gateway.net.nz [203.96.120.194]
8 184 ms 184 ms 182 ms ae0.pabr4.global-gateway.net.nz [203.96.120.74]

10 224 ms 223 ms 224 ms fed1dsrj01-ae1.0.rd.sd.cox.net [68.1.0.205]
11 225 ms 224 ms 226 ms fed1sysc02-tec300.rd.sd.cox.net [68.6.8.5]
12 230 ms 224 ms 242 ms fed1iesa01-get030201.sd.sd.cox.net [68.6.8.153]
13 225 ms 226 ms 226 ms wsip-184-182-188-140.sd.sd.cox.net [184.182.188.140]

15 225 ms 241 ms 230 ms 216.98.153.66
16 198 ms 197 ms 198 ms fc720211.aspadmin.net [66.240.202.11]

Trace complete.

The first few are my ISP which seems fine and the first big jump is hop 7 which belongs to Telecom NZ who I am not with. I think they route/gateway international traffic for NZ from Auckland and I am in Hamilton which is only 130km away.

After 8 its left NZ and looks like the States.

My ISP says that the tracert and pathping results are fine for a server in the States but don't explain why I was averaging 150 - 175 on IX since I started playing in January 2012 and then from December 22nd 2012 I now average around 230 - 235 on IX.

I told my ISP if they don't fix it I'm moving to the States ... Left4Dod is more important than anything ...

thanks - pravda

To me, it looks like you're running into trouble before you leave NZ. I'd be concerned with the added latency at hop 7 since it appears to be on the same network as hop 6.

I know it's a main gateway out of NZ so I thought maybe 7 and 8 are just higher as they might be doing the traffic prioritising for the multiple isp traffic going through them. I'll try and find out.

Is it normal for hops on the same network to have such different ms/latency?

I'd switch isp but I have to pay a $199 early disconnection fee on my current isp.

It's happened to me before. I get my Internet via Shaw, here in Canada, and they have had switches break making the ping jump incredibly high (1000s) when connecting to servers in the US. Usually it was some server in Calgary!
Shaw resolved it within a week, but it was a week of teeth gnashing.

Don't know if it is related but the Ville stats used to show my location as Hamilton but is now showing my location as Palmerston North which is 400km away.

Spotted a fellow NZ regular on IX whose ping was around 185 while mine was 225 - 230 so it can't be the Ville servers which my isp still claims. I presume there would only be one route from NZ over to the States.

I should be grateful the ddddddelay is not as bad as it used to be playing MOH on dialup ...

Thanks anyway - I'll keep pestering my isp.

Hello,

My ping/latency issue was recently resolved after 4 months when my ISP changed the gateway it goes through in NZ which is now a faster route.

Advise any kiwi's to not go via global-gateway.net.nz (Telecom?) gateway in Auckland - congested/slow ...

IV is down from 275ms to 190ms and IX is down from 235ms to 155ms ... noticeable difference ...

Hopefully it lasts ...

thanks
