Strange video issue...

Post by Tseeneth » Sat Nov 17, 2012 5:09 am

Hey guys!

When I try to connect on some servers (as for IV & IX....) I get purple and black squares on my screen instead of the game images... And only the map (upper right corner) and flags icônes (upper left corner) are perfectly visible...
For infos, when I connected to steam today, an update to DOD Source started... Could be a video problem with that update?

Thanks
Meow... :D

Purple-and-black squares often means there's a texture missing within the Source Engine's files; it can happen with any Source game and it's a very common thing to see if you spend time building maps. Given that it's widespread enough that people are having discussions about it, my guess is that yesterday's Source/TF2 update probably broke something within DoD:S. Scouring through that post, the only helpful thing I see in there is that it's possibly the film-grain effect when you're waiting to respawn. Try disabling that as a temporary workaround, but there's a good bet Valve will have it fixed, if not today, then by Monday at the latest.

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.

The box "effect of grain when character dies" was long time unchecked here and so... not helping...
Is there anyway to get back to the state of the game before the last update? Are those updates stored somewhere and possible to uninstall?

I have been playing with it - it doesn't effect game play at all. I figure they'll fix it at some point, so I'm not too worried. At first, I thought it was my (very expensive) video car. I was having kittens over it. :)

Hi,

After reading this post did a search on how to turn off 'film grain' and got this from steam forum:

It worked for me - no more purple screen.

update - I think it's been fixed anyway ...

Cheers

pravda

Disable Film Grain Effect for Day of Defeat: Source

Open Steam
Go to the Library
Right-click on Day of Defeat: Source
Select Properties from the menu
Click the Set launch options... button

Add:

+cl_enablespectatoreffects 0 +cl_enabledeatheffects 0 +cl_enabledeathfilmgrain 0 +mat_filmgrain 0

at the end of the line.

Just remove it later, when the proper fix has been done, to get the film grain back ...
