Forgive me Father for I have sinned...

Post by Dog » Thu Feb 08, 2007 1:03 pm

It was late, there was no-one on TV1, so I played on the Angry Old Farts server for a while.
OMG......unlimited snipers......
We were playing Donner and each team had about 7 or 8 snipers...got really annoying after a while. You couldn't move anywhere without getting hit by a sniper. Really bad idea! A fine server... but their set up was really bad, so I shall not return! (Oh and their admins stacked hehe!)

I shall say three Hail Marys, will thrash myself daily with birch twigs and will never go off with another server again....

Well since you know our resident preacher I think you'll be alright

Sometimes I play late at night so I have to venture out into the real world of game servers. Its always an eye opener. If you got 8 sniper slots open, you are desperate to fill your server! People will do anything to get exposure.

It makes me think about source mapping as a whole. Basically Valve isnt pumping much time n effort into releasing updates and improvements. The orange maps are killing the mapping community like you would not believe. When orange maps are so popular, who wants to spend a year making a beautifully textured map when they get ignored... maps like 4 towers and all the orange maps are so user/computer friendly. The general public doesnt have the hardware to run the "textured" maps at a reasonable fps. So for now, orange/simple maps will keep going strong (as far as customs).

Big thread on orange maps over on Day of Defeat forums
http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showt ... adid=71077

But you're right.
People love the arena maps because they are small, load up very quickly and require simple computer power.

I personally don't like them as I like the idea of running through undergrowth, tunnels etc that befits a WW2 situation!

I thought I was seeing things when the orange map came on I had almost 300fps steady. Even jumped up to 500 a couple times  . I think this is why CS is so popular as most maps are like that and most computers can run them. I even think my 1954 laptop could probably play that orange map...LMAO

That happens too much on tv4 :(

I try to balance it out, but that doesn't always work.
