TV9 - Arena

Post by Nanite » Mon Aug 25, 2008 1:50 pm

Hopefully TV9 will be unlocked tonight, no promises though. Let's try to keep all of the feedback on Arena in this one thread so it's easier for the Ops to look through.

Once it's open for play let us know your thoughts on the time limits, map selections, class limits (if any get set), etc.

Thanks!

Make sentries disabled if not already.

That should've been a default restriction set by Valve when they released arenas.

I don't know about that. Since they are single cap points, there is no use in deploying sentries. The matches I've played on are usually over in two minutes tops.
I dunno what your experience has been when you played, but I found them to be a non issue.
Just my two cents.

i played on a team of me (sniper) and 3 engies. wow buzzkill. we won, but it wasnt fun. 3 lvl 3 sgs, against a team of 4, hmm...... i would limit it to 1 engineer, but keep sgs.

Next team probably should have gotten themselves some demos instead of the 4 pyros you probably faced (pyros were completely over-represented in the arenas I have played).

The games are supposed to be quick, and since they are also jumbled every round, it makes no difference. Since teams are random, chances of stacking or sustaining a strategy is not possible. You have to adapt constantly.
The only reason why they would achive 3 L3 SG's is if they approached the map as a conventional map with conventional gameplay and not as the Arena match is was intended to be.

yeah, the games lasted longer just because the engies went about 2 feet, then started setting up shop with sgs. I have played regularly and it is fun, but there should be a way to not have the waiting thing. People who are spectating often give stuff away, like what im disguised as\where im hiding. As a new mode of play tho, its really fun

I personally don't feel there should be class limits on arenas. From what I've heard and read, the matches go by pretty fast, we should try it out for a few days and see how things go with no class limits. If after those few days, we notice that certain classes should be limited, we should let Nanite and the other server ops know.

I've only played an arena map for like 5 minutes, so I'm still new to all this and really haven't experienced it all yet.

There have been many times a pyro or scout would run out behind the house on Lumberyard and get killed by a level 1 sentry just because he didn't know it was there. Or even times I would stab a Heavy and then suddenly get shot at by a sentry that was in a window that I didn't notice.

Or have a whole team gathered around a sentry protecting is as the engie builds it to level 3 right next to the point door so when the point door opens, everyone on the point would get killed.

At times it can be easily brought down, sure, but there's an equal chance bring you down instead.

I just don't think it's fair to have a machine that automatically targets people in range and shoots at then endlessly in a match where you only have one life.

At least spies and snipers have to aim and get their target rather than just have a gun that automatically shoots at them.

I want to be able to focus on that Medic+Demo combo, not have to deal with a fidgety Engie who uses a cheap tatic in a Sudden Death-esque match. Sentries are for defending, what are you defending? You're not defending anything, we're not suppose to be defending, we're suppose to be at each others throats. Fight like a man and use your wrench or shotgun instead, geeze.

DISPENSERS ARE ACCEPTABLE THOUGH.

I feel sentries in arena could be strategic. They really shouldn't be an issue, people know they are part of the game play and running out from behind a building without first looking to see what's around the corner is kind of your own fault.

I'd be more concerned of snipers picking me off from farther away then a sentry.

Hmmm ....

We have all run into SG's in the past. It is part of the game. Can't blame the game for it, though. It's his choce to deploy and your initiative to avoid. You can always compensate by just waiting for the timer to go live and cap the point, match over. His SG becomes useless at that time and you can go in and bash his little pretty head in .... he'll think twice about sitting by his SG next round.

The key to arena is to understand that the mechanics will be different and will require a new type of gameplay. Remember, Arena is Kill or be Killed, but you also win by capping the single point. People who sit defensively will loose time and time again unless they change their ways. Give it time ...

They read the little de.scription that said "no water and no medkits = Pyro is deadlier". Of course, you're not so deadly if the other team sees you coming.

And on a Sentry-related note: If Valve were truly smart, they'd make it so killing an Engineer instantly destroys all his buildings. Which I think is how it goes in Sudden Death.

Bingo. Doesn't it do that now when an engineer is killed in arenas? The buildings are instantly destroyed.
