24/7 Server Maps

So lets say hypothetically theville decides to add another 24/7 map server where only one map is played. What map would make a good pick and why?

These are map qualities I would look for:
  • All 9 classes have viability throughout most of the map
  • Solid flank routes are a must
  • The map should be somewhat dynamic (things change when blu caps points)
  • Fairly straightforward directions; it shouldn't be very confusing which way to go
I think most single stage pl maps fit the description (badwater, upward) and while cp_steel definitely doesn't match my last criteria its still really fun to play and fits the others very well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. A 24/7 pl_badwater server would get more traffic than TV7 and would probably challenge TV6. I can't think of a better use for TV3 than switching it and seeing what happens.

We have a lot of east coast players in the Ville who don't have as much fun on 6 and 7 because of the ping. TV8 is great for them when its busy but most of the time our player base is predominately west coast people. TV3 could help balance things out a bit if the server was more popular.

I don't have stats but I get the distinct impression that badwater is one of the top 3 most played maps in all of TF2. It appeals to every class and you don't need a specific set of classes to win. That makes it one of the more dynamic maps but at the same time everyone understands how it plays out, meaning they can identify how to play together more effectively.

We don't currently run a 24/7 payload map so I hope it would attract new community members who haven't found us through the rotation server or dustbowl. There are a lot of other 24/7 badwater servers out there already so we might struggle at first getting new regulars lined up but the map is good enough and this community is strong enough to make it a success.

...pl_dustbowl :3

-All classes can fit the criteria in payload.
-Some flanks here and there.
-Sentry placement changes and positioning.
-Dustbowl except with a payload.

Probably not the best permanent 24/7 server, but it may be nice to have. Dustbowl is already popular, so why not change things up a bit?

Prang nailed it. Badwater, goldrush, and upward are the most played pl maps.

I assume thunder mountain comes in there somewhere.... but that map hurts my brain :p

I suggested early that the server be labeled a Payload & Attack/Defend maps server. The reason these two types are popular is because the goal for each team is fairly fixed and simple, either push the cart or stand on a point that you'll never have to stand on again. People can work through a script of their own when playing maps like this. Maps like Steel or CP or even Payload Race have a much more dynamic game flow where taking action and defense have to happen at the same time. New players get confused as to what they should be doing given a certain situation (i.e. should you stay on a point to cap or go defend a point being capped that would block your cap.)

I'll 3rd (or 4th) prang on this. There is a reason I use badwater when trying to seed tv7. It is a map people seem to like and works well for a multitude of classes (plus I can continue to be bad sniper on it with all the long sightlines).

If you are looking for a 24/7 single map that might work, I would think this would have the best chance of all the maps I know.

Can we have some messages spam in the chat window in the servers advertising the new badwater server for people who don't forum?

Maybe this would also be a good time to introduce free bronze subscriptions for top seeders? It would provide a really nice incentive for people to seed the badwater server and when they get lazy about it they'll have the sweet, sweet taste of a reserve slot and donate for more.

It was done shortly after the server was set up. See here: http://www.theville.org/forums/villetools/ads.php
