The Scout's Accent

Post by JeffK » Mon Oct 03, 2011 10:26 pm

A. I love the King of the Hill server provided, it's the one I'm primarily on when I play TF2 as Jeff K so thank you.

B. I don't know where the voice actor is from for the scout but it's a terrible Boston accent (shame on him if he is from beantown). Maybe he should've watched the departed or good will hunting prior to recording. Just had to throw that out there.

Scout's accent is more Brooklyn than Boston from my understanding (never been to either place to know myself :P). That's kind of part of the whole TF2 "thing" though - the characters are designed as caricatured versions of the stereotypes of their supposed homelands, rather than accurate depictions. Valve once said something about "Demo [being] as Scottish as the Sniper is Australian" (I don't recall the exact analogy, but I remember the part about Sniper and Australia), indicating they were fully aware that the voice acting isn't true to reality.

It's just part of the over-arching weirdness of the TF2 world. :P

Honestly, I don't care how accurate his voice is. I wouldn't want it any other way :D

I always thought he was a New Yorker, as he sounds just like the NYC branch of my family. Also, he acts like a Yankees fan. When I found out he was supposedly Bostonian, it kinda threw me for a loop.

Use the phrase, "Don't cha know"
Pronounce "Over there" as "O-er Der"
or
Talk like William Macy in Fargo?

No one thinks they have an accent, but everyone does :D

Glad you like the server, Jeff, and nice to see you joined the forums. Stick around, we might shoot you, blow you up, cut off your head, or burn you alive, but we don't bite :)

1. Welcome! Always nice to have more people!

2. That's kinda the thing, I read a quote from the writer of the game that the classes accents are so terrible because they wanted to imagine what people in that time thought they sounded like, not what they actually did sound like.

But do you drink "pop" or "soda"? And if you went to St. Louis would you be in Missoura or Missourie?

This, which bugged me more than Valve trolling people with Tasmania vs. Australia or whatever it was that they did with the Sniper.

Here's a thread I made awhile ago that features videos of all the work these voice actors have done.

The voice actor for the scout is one crazy guy!
