Mentors/Mentees?
Re: Mentors/Mentees?
I could give a few tips about general things, like how playing one class does not usually make you better with another, or that frequent class swapping only leads to rage.i could give a few tips on being a scout and/or sniper but i am pretty ignorant about the other classes.
EDIT: I also like to think about the mathematical mechanics of TF2 so their is also that.

Re: Mentors/Mentees?
This isn't actually true though, skill transfers between classes pretty well, TF2 is a game about positioning more so than what class you're playing, good positioning transfers over well to all 9 classes and while it can be more easily learned by certain classes (scout/soldier/demo/medic) all classes benefit from knowing where to be.Kagsacar wrote:I could give a few tips about general things, like how playing one class does not usually make you better with another...

Seconded. I have 1100 hours in this game, and my top class is only 160. I feel I've benefited greatly by playing many classes instead of just one. For example, I'm more intimately aware of the strengths and weaknesses of various classes because I've personally experienced them, which then helps me defeat them when I come across them on the battlefield.Fano wrote:This isn't actually true though, skill transfers between classes pretty well, TF2 is a game about positioning more so than what class you're playing, good positioning transfers over well to all 9 classes and while it can be more easily learned by certain classes (scout/soldier/demo/medic) all classes benefit from knowing where to be.Kagsacar wrote:I could give a few tips about general things, like how playing one class does not usually make you better with another...

I play medic, engi and pyro mostly. I could use help with pyro the most, but I would really like sniper help as well. I play sniper as my "our team is so good, they don't need me" class since my play essentially puts us a man down.
I lack a mouse most of the time when I play and thus my rocket/sticky jumping is poor. I avoid those classes on maps where jumping is essential.

Re: Mentors/Mentees?
The biggest answer I have when it comes to how to get better at sniping is getting used to a mouse setting and work to get comfortable with it. OH and using a mouse in general
Nothing helps you get used to sniping than going 1v1 mge with another sniper of greater skill. I go at it with agro and I do say he really helps

Re: Mentors/Mentees?
hmmmmm it seems i miss spoke. What i really meant is that i used to think that playing a scout would help my reflexes, and that would help me snipe jumpy, or sudden targets, as it turns out this is not the case. That is what i really meant, their is a wealth of knowledge in playing all the classes but mechanically they are so different they will do nothing or even hinder your ability to play another class. The Domer wrote:Seconded. Re: Mentors/Mentees?
I kinda have to agree with you kagsacar, As I play different classes my brain gets hardwired for it and I cant seem to play any other class at the time like what my brain wants

Re: Mentors/Mentees?
Depending on the map the pyro's playstyle can change drastically, if there are a lot of flank routes then you could go that option and try to capitalize when the enemy team is otherwise occupied, the most important thing is to know when to come in as just randomly flanking when the other team can see you will usually get you killed, cutting off retreat routes is something you always have to have in mind and especially as a pyro (or even more so as a scout) since it can be pretty devastating. You'llNeverWalkAlone wrote:I play medic, engi and pyro mostly. Alternatively, on maps that are fairly linear (most payload maps and things like dustbowl or warpath) flanking is essentially non-existent, and your best bet as pyro is basically to babysit the medic and his pocket, watch their backs from spies and try to blow away spam that may hurt your medic, this is how we have our pyro play on our highlander team as a flanking pyro in higher levels of play is pretty useless and usually better left to the scout.

Re: Mentors/Mentees?
This is all a pretty interesting to me. Being only ~170 hours in I feel like there are a number of areas where I can improve. I've been able to learn a lot just watching a lot of the guys on here. Some things I have been able to get a few tips on. I've tried most every class for a little bit and there are good's and bad's. I've tried to learn maps well and that has helped. I've tried to get into games with some of the more respected players on here and just the intensity and strategy has helped a lot. I feel like there are a few things that I can tweak.
I've played a lot of soldier at first and did ok. I wasn't holding my teams back (I think) but I just wasn't able to really feel like I was pulling together more than a distraction. Slowly I would accumulate a few kills in a row or some assists. I tried some other classes, pyro, spy, and heavy. They all are a little easier to get some kills but have some weaknesses that better players can exploit, as has been mentioned. I can do ok as heavy or pyro with a better top-end supporting cast. Spy I can do ok with if I'm one of the better players (rarely...mostly pub servers). Scout has been fun to learn b/c tactics are way different; sniper is the same way. I've played demo more recently and the patience I've learned timing shots in other classes has helped me. But some of you guys are just crazy good demos so I'm not as useful most times. Medic is where I have had the chance to blossom if you will. I feel like I've been able to be a part of progressing my teams. I've been able to pick up a lot playin with old man and OMG Ohnoes.
I think I would want to learn general tactics, but if I were to narrow it to a few classes I would say medic/sniper/demo/soldier.

You might want to fix it so you can choose more than one option...
And I've done mentoring for FaN and advanced scout tactics.
